*WHAT IS A FIRE WALL?*
An example of a fire wall would be in houses, it's there to prevent a fire from spreading in to the neighboring house. In a computer the fire wall accomplishes the same thing, it blocks hackers...viruses Ext. from entering your computer. A fire wall works by restricting cases to your ports, ports are the door ways that info passes through and enters while you are connected. So if someone decides to sneak in to your computer via a port, typically port 80 he is stopped dead in his tracks by your fire wall.
*DO I NEED A FIRE WALL?*
The people who are in the most danger of being "port sniffed" and attacked are the people who are constantly connected to the Internet via Cable or DSL or people who are on a network and wish to protect them selves. People who run on dial up are not typically connected for long enough periods to have any damage done. But why not be safe and run a fire wall any way?
*DO I STILL NEED An ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM?*
YES YOU DO! Although a fire wall protects you from a Internet based attach Zone Alarm does not do an excellent job at protecting attachment or script viruses. So try running Norton Anti Virus or some other program as well as Zone Alarm at the same time.
*FEATURES I LIKE*
-Stop All Access: This feature allows you to immediately stop outgoing and incoming data and basically freezes your connection. This is useful if you think you are being hacked.
-Lock Feature: If you run your computer 24/7 and don't want any one diddling your connection the lock feature will throw the sneak right offline.
-Add Blocking: Zone Alarm will remove adds by preference if they slow your machine down or it will just kill all the adds it can. It also may replace the adds with a [AD] tag.
*DOES IT WORK*
Yes, zone alarm will work just as well as any other fire wall. For those looking for a free version it is also available at zonelabs.com. The free version is a full fledge fire wall it just lacks some of the premium features of the pro version.
