Pros:Works with other HP cartridges, easy to find.
Cons:HP has no Windows XP drivers. IF USING XP, DO NOT BUY.
The Bottom Line: HP released this product before it was perfected. Software and drivers for XP are non-existant, documentation is very weak, and merger with Compaq makes tech support impossible.
I bought an HP K80 and found out that they still don't have drivers to support anything beyond basic print and scan functions for Windows XP (as of 10 June 2002). Windows XP has been out for over 6 months and HP has yet to address this major issue.
Additionally, the documentation that comes with the HP is poor and does not address specific setup functions such as using your K80 with an answering machine, or on the same line as your voice calls (built in feature distinguishes when an incoming fax is detected). Adding to the insult, HP does not have the manual on their website in ENGLISH. As of this date, they have 5 foreign languages, but not ENGLISH which, despite my Spanish skills, makes it very difficult to read. Odd for a company based in the US.
HP seems to be using a date code programmed onto printer cartridges. Once the cartridge expires, the K80 will not use them. This is to prevent people from buying refurbished cartridges or refilling them. This means you will be stuck buying expensive cartridges from HP long after your warranty is no longer valid (1 year).
As a side note, many users have had problems with the K80, which fails to disconnect from a phone line when using 4-pin phone cords. If you are experiencing this problem, you must do one of two things: Try to find a two-pin cord (difficult, Radio Shack did not sell), or remove two pins from a 4-pin cord, or make a bridge to extend the cord that came with the fax so it will reach the wall.
