| loverboy4u_17's Full Review: Medal of Honor: Allied Assault For Windows |
“You have been assigned to a mission few would qualify for, a mission few would survive. You are about to embark upon a great crusade, the eyes of the world are upon you, the hopes and prayers of millions peace loving people are with you. At a turning point of World War II across a fifty mile stretch of France’s Normandy Coast, the allies staged a massive assault against Hitler’s vaunted Atlantic war. Valor. Duty. Leadership. Sacrifice. Can one man truly make a difference?”
That is how the “Medal Of Honor- Allied Assault” begins. An awesome video coupled with a great audio and a speech given above sets a perfect tone for the game to begin. Medal of Honor is a First Person Shooter like no other. Read further and you will know why this game is different from your other shooting games.
Pre Release Information and Hype - The game was actually first created for the Playstation. The game is originally conceived by DreamWorks interactive which is the game development of Steven Spielberg’s movie production company. It also won the Best of Show award at E3,2001. For those of you who don’t know, E3 stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo and it is here that all the major game developers showcase their forthcoming games.
Initial Impressions - As I saw the initial video and played a few levels I could not help but notice the similarity with the movie Saving Private Ryan. You also have a recreation of the famous Omaha Beach Invasion in all its glory with many soldiers rushing out of boats on to the beach and you are one of them. Also much of the action in this game reminded me of classic war movies like The Guns of Navarone. So the game begins in an awesome manner enticing (yep, that’s the word) to go further.
Story - You don the role of Lt. Mike Powell during one of the most talked about and storied times in the US – World War II. You are a ranger of the First Ranger Battalion of the Office of the Strategic Services (OSS). You are involved in a series of offensive taken by the Allied Power against the Axis. I might say that these “offensives” are in fact based on real and actual battles. So this game is as real as it gets when you look at the history side of it.
Gameplay - As I told you earlier, this game is very similar to war movies and you will be mostly using guns to fight your enemy though you get to use a tank in a couple of levels. You will assault a few places in Africa, survive the machine gunners of the Omaha beach, dodge and find the snipers in a bombed French village before they can snipe you, dress as a German to go behind enemy lines, rescue a few captured agents, sabotage U-boats and bomb tanks.
The control of the game is rather easy and even newbies to gaming will find it pretty easy to handle. You also have a compass with a needle that points towards your next objective so that you don’t get lost in the middle of a mission. Some missions will also require you to use radio and a binocular so that you can call an air strike to destroy a certain target.
Well everyone knows that no war is fought alone and EA also knows about it. In most of the levels you have to work with other soldiers to fight the enemy. Though you cannot give direct orders to these soldiers as in Rainbow Six or Rouge Spear, the soldiers will follow your lead and give you cover. The AI of these squads is pretty good as they will cover you, follow your lead and will work as a real military unit. The same goes for your enemies too. They will take cover, peep from windows and snipe you, duck behind the walls, kick back grenades at you.
There is a huge arsenal of weapons in this game and all are the original one used in the WWII. There are a varied range of weapons with Pistols like Colt , the Sub Machine Guns like the Thompson and the MP40, Machine guns like the BAR rifle, Rifles like the Springfield Sniper and of course the grenades and the Bazooka. Probably the best part of this game is the Omaha Beach Invasion where you start on a boar surrounded by other soldiers. The ramp drops and you and other soldiers storm down the beach amid the sounds of the bullets whizzing by, explosion of rockets and the shouts and cries of your fellow soldier. Awesome Stuff!
Graphics - This game uses a modified version of the Quake III graphic engine. That explains the surprisingly good AI of the enemy. Quake III engine is beautiful but not that bright. The game though not as awesomely spectacular as Return to Castle Wolfenstein is as good as it can get. The developers have developed very good character models but not as good as Wolfenstein but that is compensated by the huge and detailed levels. The facial detail too is pretty impressive. If your PC can run Max Payne then I guess you should have no problem running this game. This game is right up there with Max Payne and Wolfenstein in terms of Graphics.
Sound - It wont be a over statement if I said that the sound in this game is among the best in the business. You have appropriate music playing at every level of the game. At the Omaha beach level you have this kind of US patriotic music playing and then slow music when are you are trying to infiltrate enemy bases. And in case you have good soundcard with a good speaker system you can hear bullets whizzing by and artillery shells incoming towards you. EA has definitely understood the importance of sound in games.
Some men can change the tide of the battle can or an entire war his actions. Such men are able to see clearly in the face of chaos and give themselves completely to the cause and defy some huge odds to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Such men are called Heroes. So do you want to be a Hero?.
