  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Ease of Use:
  • Quality of Tech Support:
Pros:GREAT Design, Speed, Support, 1 Year Free MSN Internet Access
Cons:No choice of OS, weak fan for long use
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a fast, well-designed, powerful machine, this is the one for you. This outstanding THX-certified machine will provide high-quality performance for many years to come.

Are you looking for the most powerful machine available on the market? Look no further. This well-built Dell Dimension 8100 powerhouse is currently the fastest machine money can buy. Here is a part-by-part breakdown of the system:

**Intel Pentium 4 Processor - 1.4 GHZ**
Once you've tried Intel's latest processor, you'll immediately realize its full, power-packed potential. Tasks that used to takes minutes now take only seconds to complete!

**Rambus PC800 RDRAM**
To reach the fullest potential of the fastest processor on the market, you're going to need the fastest memory available! PC800 RDRAM is an amazing compliment to an already blazing system. It is important to get PC800 and not PC600 for the best performance.

**Sony 19" Trinitron Monitor**
Sony Trinitron monitors have long been the cream of the crop product that cannot be matched by any other. This monitor boasts the flattest, sharpest screen and will absolutely serve all your viewing needs.

**32MB GeFroce2 GTS**
If you're a gamer, this is the card for you. There is no other video card available that can so impressively output such beautiful graphics.

**Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound Card**
I must admit, I never knew the sound card made such a big difference in sound quality till I used this sound card. The DSP effects this card is capable of are amazing to say the least. I got much more than I expected from this sound card. The Santa Cruz supports 5.1 channel analog audio, contains a digital out port, and is compatible with almost every form of 3D and home theater audio decoding, including EAX and Dolby Digital.

**3Com Integrated Network Interface Card**
This high-quality 3Com network card comes built into the motherboard! This is great because it saves you a PCI slot which would normally be occupied by a network card such as this one.

**Dell® Enhanced Quiet Key Keyboard**
Yes, I have taken the time to even tell you about the keyboard because it too is very important. It is definitely one of the lightest keyboards I have ever used. It contains 3 buttons above the function keys which can be programmed. Unlike most keyboards, these extra buttons do not come at the expense of space.

**Case**
Color: This sleek "Ion Silver" case as it is called is stunning. The front of the tower is mostly silver and the rest of the case is black. The keyboard, mouse, monitor, and speakers are also a matching black color. This machine is not tacky at all like those iMacs and the like.

Cover: Dell is finally on the ball when it comes to case design. The cover can be removed with the touch of a button. Best of all there are no nails or those pesky tracks that you must slide the cover into. The cover can be replaced by simply inserting 3 large tabs at the top of the case into 3 large insertion areas then pressing lightly on the bottom of the cover.

Cooling: Another impressive feature of the case is the use of a bit of ducting to channel cool air to the CPU heat sink to keep the CPU cool. However, you should be aware that the variable speed fan will not cut it if you plan on leaving your machine on frequently as the CPU will become fairly noisy. Call Dell and request that they install a more powerful fan if this becomes a problem as it will do a much better job keeping the chip cool. This fan will be slightly louder than the less powerful one during short-term use, but prevents the CPU itself from becoming noisy following long-term use.

Power: The power supply swings up nicely on its hinges to provide easy access to the memory slots on the motherboard as well as the back of the drive bays. This mighty 330 WATT power supply will provide more power than you'll ever need for any parts inside the system.

Expansion: The expandable case comes with:
5 PCI slots
4 RDRAM (memory) slots
4 USB ports
3 drive bays
2 Hard drive bays
1 4x AGP port

**Software**
Windows Millenium Edition
Norton AntiVirus 2001
Resolution Assistant
Dell Proactive Support

**Customer Service/Technical Support**
Dell technical support has won many awards and rightfully so. It seems Dell has raised their qualification standards and their representatives are now much more knowledgeable than before. The average wait time also seems to have dropped from the past. I should also note that I am pleased with the fact that my machine was shipped exactly 6 days after my order was placed online.

Conclusion
I have been EXTREMELY happy with my Dell Dimension 8100 from Day 1. It has more than served all of my needs. I frequently run many applications such as Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, CuteFTP, Winamp, and Outlook Express simultaneously. This system has no problem whatsoever of handling the heavy load these programs provide. Playing Quake 3 Arena and Unreal has also been an honor on this system. I have NEVER, EVER played such graphic-intensive games so smoothly on a PC. I sit comfortably around 150 FPS in Quake III even at the most explosive times. Overall, this machine is great. Two friends of mine actually went out and bought Dimension 8100's after using my system because they were so impressed. Once you have used one, you will also understand. The price tag is very reasonable for PCs nowadays as Dell run many promotions and the support you receive for it is unmatched. Accordingly, I give this machine 5 out of 5 stars!
