Go Back to the Recycle Bin

Written: Jan 20 '01 (Updated Jan 20 '01)
Pros:Protects you from yourself
Cons:Protects you from running programs, as well
The Bottom Line: Horrific hog of system resources that serves no useful purpose. In situations one would consider it beneficial, it would likely crash anyways.

The people who made GoBack are idealistic. Unrealistically idealistic. They must think that people are actually willing to sacrifice a large percentage of hard drive and system performance, just in case they happen to horribly disfigure the system or important files. Personally, I prefer a system that actually runs.

A bit of background here... GoBack is a resource hog that comes pre-installed on many systems. I believe that persons with extremely poor judgment can also purchase the software. Practically every action performed by the user is monitored by GoBack, which boots with the system and is constantly running in the corner of the taskbar. This is done so that, if someone deletes that all-important file... or thinks he knows more about advanced settings than he actually does... he can undo his devastating errors.

This is all fine and good, if that is your top priority. If you are silly like me, however, and actually like to run programs on your computer, you may not like GoBack.

It may occur to some users that in order to keep track of everything that goes on, a program would use lots of memory and processor time. That, of course, is an understatement. On a friend's computer, I managed to locate and successfully remove an enormous 1-gigabyte file created by GoBack. This on a 10-gig hard drive. After disabling GoBack, his 700Mhz box could actually RUN programs that suggest 233Mhz on the system requirements.

For some reason that still has me baffled, my aunt's 300Mhz Celeron with 32MB RAM (not exactly a speed demon) came with GoBack as well. It could barely boot Windows without crashing, let alone run applications. After eliminating the pestering virus-like presence of this atrocity to computing speed, it ran nicely (or at least as nicely as you can expect from a 300Mhz with 32MB RAM).

In a nutshell, this lame excuse for a program is far too intrusive into a system. I am still unsure as to the potential market for such a piece of software. Slow systems can't run it, and people who have fast systems have them for a reason... nobody wants their new 1.2Ghz Athlon to run like a 500Mhz Celeron.

Personally, I'd recommend simple common sense... Don't delete important files, don't dabble with the system registry, and leave "advanced settings" alone unless you know what you're doing. I'd much rather have decent system performance than a little extra peace of mind.
