I agree with your assessment of this record that there are many fine moments, it is just not too great when you get past those songs. I'll have to dust the cobwebs off this one and listen to She's a Star a couple dozen times.
Regarding Big Head Todd, though I do think that Stratagem is a good record, you might get a better impression of them through Beautiful World, with its hit Resignation Superman. I first heard them opening for Robert Plant, in 1993. You need to catch them live if they come to your town.

Yup. Point taken. I bought Strategem from Big Head Todd & The Monsters and found myself turned off completely. Maybe I'll have to get Sister Sweetly.

...I'll generally want to start with their best, or most representative album, not one that wavers between good and ordinary. Case in point, Sister Sweetly by Big Head Todd and The Monsters.
I may have come late to the H.O.R.D.E. party, (except for Blues Traveler), but I went on to buy everything this excellent trio has released! Appreciate an honest appraisal so I'll know how best to spend my hard-earned moola.
