Fuji ST-120 Super VHS Video Tape

Written: Jun 20 '02 (Updated Jun 21 '02)
Pros:Picture quality and sound, durability, assembly quality
Cons:Price, plastic case
The Bottom Line: The Fuji ST-120 is a very good buy in terms of picture quality and durability.

Since I got my SVHS-ET VCR, I have tried many different brands and types of tapes recording from digital sources (DirecTV, Adelphia digital cable, non-Macromedia-protected DVDs).

Although manufacturers of SVHS-ET VCRs state that you can get picture quality close to SVHS by using their SVHS-ET mode on a “high-quality” VHS tape and save money in process, I found that SVHS recording on regular (even higher grade) tape is inferior to recordings in SVHS mode on a “true” SVHS tape. There is video noise in VHS-ET that is absent in SVHS.

I routinely record shows (Formula One races, South Park, Saturday Night Live, etc.) to watch them later and want them to look as close to original broadcast as possible. To that end I use SVHS mode and SVHS tape. One of the types I use is Fuji ST-120.

Although it is not cheap, quality usually cost money. Plus, the tape proved to be durable and can sustain frequent reuse.

Picture Quality

Although the picture quality also depends on other variables (your VCR, signal quality, etc.), when I use my VCR I can see the difference between different kinds of video tape. Especially visible is video noise. The ST-120 is excellent in this respect as well as features great color reproduction and high detail level.

The sound is excellent, but this is the case with virtually all video tapes if you use Hi-Fi stereo VCR.

Annoyance

I am annoyed by the plastic cases the SVHS tapes come in. It applies not only to Fuji but also other manufacturers, but in Fuji's case, it is even worse than others. Regular VHS tapes usually come in paper cases from which it is easy to remove them and put them back into.

With plastic cases of Fuji SVHS tapes, it is more difficult to put the tape back in the case. If they want more protection for the tape/cassette, they should use the book-type opening cases or better-designed plastic cases.

Bottom Line

The Fuji ST-120 is a very good buy in terms of picture quality and durability.
