The case that you hate so much actually is very beneficial in the storage of tape.
Don't quote me on this, but the case is made out of PVC material. This in turn blocks out electrical particles in the air. It allows the tape to deteriorate less over time than a cardboard case would.

I tried using them in EP and the quality was quite poor, so I figured it was a bad idea :o(

...a case of these tapes as well - from Ebay. Ran me $35 (I was lucky).
They are everything you say they are - but I've noticed that repeated use in the ET mode will begin to degrade the image over time.
Still, the output for SVHS on these tapes is stellar...
