As other posters have said, you can get a $25 bonus when you open a new account if you have a minimum deposit of $250 or more. It looks like everyone snatched up those deals pretty quickly, because all of the links keep getting used up.

Open either an INGDirect Orange Savings account or an Electric Orange Checking account with a min. of $250 deposit to earn $25 bonus (for new customers only).

ING Direct offers the best interest rate in this market for a risk-free investment (FDIC insured up till $100000 for single and $200000 for joint accounts).

I've been with INGDirect for the past 3 years and have been totally happy with their service. Even I have my mortgage with them. They have some nice policies like not including your name, by default, to any of their mailing lists unless you explicitly ask them - which is kind of a surprise since everyone else does the other way around, selling all your personal info, and would take long or ignore even if you ask them to do.

They don't waste money through advertising which saves customer's money - and they rely on the good words of their existing customers - which, in my opinion, speaks volumes.

Seems to me that ING has a great strategy here. As long as they offer this bonus program, everyone is going to be busy generating referrals and collecting their referral bonuses and no one is going to say anything bad about the bank. I am surveying internet banks and am able to find plenty of comments about other banks. However, when I come to ING, there is nothing but referral bonus traffic. The bank has very effectively blocked any honest criticism. A great strategy, I must say, but one that make me even more cautious.

ING has been operating in America for over 100 years. They are a member of the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) which insures bank deposits up to $100,000 for an individual account and up to $200,000 if you have both an individual and joint account. The site is very user friendly and transfers are usually handled within 48 hours. ING was one of the first banks to initiate the use of the most advanced logon security features which is very important to me. They also have a great automatic savings plan that I use personally that has allowed me to save like never before. Interest is compounded daily instead of monthly like at most banks so your savings grow much more rapidly. I have tried NetBank and others but find ING consistently more efficient.
You can receive a $25 bonus for opening an account with a minimum deposit of $250 and they pay members $10 for each referral.

As a client of both ING Direct and Virtual Bank, I do have to say that ING Direct is faster (by a day or two) at crediting the sign-up bonus to your account than is the case with Virtual Bank. However, if you're planning on making the extra money (as you should) by referring others, I would recommend Virtual Bank over ING Direct. Virtual Bank is absolutely very efficient about crediting your account (hands-free, hassle-free), and they credit you $20 for each successful referral you give make. In contrast, ING Direct offers $10 for each referral, and in my case, I've had to call in on 3 different occasions to have them manually credit my account for a referral I KNOW was successful (friends and family whom I know for sure had opened the account). I know it's 10 free dollars, but I think it becomes a bit of a hassle when you have to take the time out to make calls for the money that should've been automatically transferred into your account.

Having said that, though, I don't see why you shouldn't open both accounts, keep the bonus dollars, and close one you like least at a later date. As long as you keep the minimum balance (which is next to nothing at both banks) for the mandatory duration, I think this is a savvy plan.

indiehead3 had a question about how to refer people to ING.

It's easy to do if you have an ING account. When you login to check your account look down at the bottom of the page (main account page when you login). At the bottom of the page is a dollar sign and something about "refer a friend". You might have to scroll down to see it (it's cut off a little on my laptop). When you see the refer a friend link click it and follow the simple instructions.

The ING online savings account is indeed a good deal. Open an account with $250 and use a referral link to get a $25 bonus (you must keep the account open at least a month).
Another good referral deal is VirtualBank. Open an account with $100 and get a $20 bonus (you must keep the account open for at least 3 months).
Both banks are FDIC insured. VirtualBank has a slightly higher yield right now (4.60%).

I have had an ING savings account for several months. I have set up an automatic savings transfer from my local (0.5% APR) bank. I have also initiated a transfer back into my local bank, scheduled for a few weeks from now, just before my Visa bill is due this month, to cover a cash shortfall. ZERO problems.

Pros:

Security - to login to my ING account, one needs to know at least three pieces of information, and the three vary each time. Also, ING uses mouse-clicks to enter part of the code, which can't be collected by keystroke logging spyware. My local bank, where I do my online banking, only has a static keyboard-entered userid & password to protect me.

When I initiate a transaction, I get an e-mail, with a transaction number of something like "49", instead of some mumbo-jumbo long cryptic number like those used by other institutions, like Fidelity or my local bank. A small thing, granted, but simple is ALWAYS better & fewer digits provide a smaller chance of juxtaposing or dropping a digit.

Cons:
None, so far. I am impressed. I just hope paying for all those ING TV ads won't eat into my interest rate...

For example, using the Orange Savings Account APY from December 31, 2005 (3.80%), all New Funds that are deposited on January 19, 2006, will yield 4.75% APY for 87 days until April 15, 2006, and would yield 3.80% APY after that date. So, the blended APY for the first year after account opening is 4.03%. The blended APY for New Funds that are on deposit for fewer than 87 days will be lower, as it may vary depending on the number of days the promotional rate is earned. The non-promotional APY is variable and may change during the Sale Period.

Winter Save Up Sale FAQ

1. Who is eligible for the Winter Save Up Sale?
Everyone – current Customers who have an Orange Savings Account (one account or multiple accounts) and new Customers who open an Orange Savings Account.

2. Is all of my money eligible for the sale?
All New Funds deposited to your Orange Savings Account between January 19 and April 15 from your linked account (manually or through your Automatic Savings Plan) or through Direct Deposit are eligible to earn the 4.75% APY.

Interest earned, transfers between Orange Savings Accounts, and any disbursements from an Orange CD that are transferred into your Orange Savings Account are not eligible for the bonus rate. However, this money will still continue to earn the current rate of 3.80% .

3. Is there a minimum balance required to receive the 4.75% sale APY? No.

4. What happens if I make a withdrawal or transfer from my account?
Any withdrawal or transfer from your account (which includes moving funds to other deposit accounts at ING DIRECT) will decrease the portion of your balance that is earning 4.75% APY. The best way to take advantage of the 4.75% APY is to truly save and leave your money in your account.

5. How do you calculate the interest for the Winter Save Up Sale?
To determine what portion of your Orange Savings Account balance will earn the 4.75% APY, during the Sale Period we add up all of your new deposits from an external source and then subtract all withdrawals from the account (whether internal or external) from that total. If that amount is greater than zero, it is eligible for the 4.75% APY. If an account is closed during the Sale Period, the 4.75% may not be earned for the entire period that the new funds were on deposit.

6. How long is the promotion running?
The Winter Save Up Sale runs from January 19, 2006 to April 15, 2006.

7. What happens to my money after the promotion ends on April 15, 2006?
All of the money in your Orange Savings Account will receive the current APY at that time.

8. Where can I see the interest I’ve earned during the Winter Save Up Sale?
The interest you’ve earned on your New Funds will be posted to your account at the end of each month as Winter Save Up Sale Interest. It will be displayed as a line item in the Account Details of your Orange Savings Account on our secure website and on your monthly Statement.

9. What are the tax implications?
Interest earned as part of the Winter Save Up Sale, just like all other earned interest, is generally taxable income. It will be included in your 2006 year end tax reporting.

10. Does this promotion apply to my Orange CD Account?
No, the promotion is only being offered for the Orange Savings Account.
