Great banking concept. Instead of spending their revenue on branches, ING spends it on what matters to us: no fees, and high interest rates of 4.5%. Another cool advantage: no automated 1-800 numbers, just people.

Seems to me that ING has a great strategy here. As long as they offer this bonus program, everyone is going to be busy generating referrals and collecting their referral bonuses and no one is going to say anything bad about the bank. I am surveying internet banks and am able to find plenty of comments about other banks. However, when I come to ING, there is nothing but referral bonus traffic. The bank has very effectively blocked any honest criticism. A great strategy, I must say, but one that make me even more cautious.

ING has been operating in America for over 100 years. They are a member of the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) which insures bank deposits up to $100,000 for an individual account and up to $200,000 if you have both an individual and joint account. The site is very user friendly and transfers are usually handled within 48 hours. ING was one of the first banks to initiate the use of the most advanced logon security features which is very important to me. They also have a great automatic savings plan that I use personally that has allowed me to save like never before. Interest is compounded daily instead of monthly like at most banks so your savings grow much more rapidly. I have tried NetBank and others but find ING consistently more efficient.
You can receive a $25 bonus for opening an account with a minimum deposit of $250 and they pay members $10 for each referral.

As a client of both ING Direct and Virtual Bank, I do have to say that ING Direct is faster (by a day or two) at crediting the sign-up bonus to your account than is the case with Virtual Bank. However, if you're planning on making the extra money (as you should) by referring others, I would recommend Virtual Bank over ING Direct. Virtual Bank is absolutely very efficient about crediting your account (hands-free, hassle-free), and they credit you $20 for each successful referral you give make. In contrast, ING Direct offers $10 for each referral, and in my case, I've had to call in on 3 different occasions to have them manually credit my account for a referral I KNOW was successful (friends and family whom I know for sure had opened the account). I know it's 10 free dollars, but I think it becomes a bit of a hassle when you have to take the time out to make calls for the money that should've been automatically transferred into your account.
Having said that, though, I don't see why you shouldn't open both accounts, keep the bonus dollars, and close one you like least at a later date. As long as you keep the minimum balance (which is next to nothing at both banks) for the mandatory duration, I think this is a savvy plan.
