They DID use CGI (Reply to this comment)
by robotech_master
You're slightly in error when you say that they used no CGI. The spaceships were CGI; the animators used a technique known as "cel shading" to blend it with the traditional 2-D animation of the rest of the film (the way they did with the submarines and the giant lobster in Atlantis). You can tell if you know what to look forthe smooth and regular way they move and turn, as if they were three-dimensional objects. That sort of large, detailed, turning object is one of the hardest things to animate believably in 2Dwhich is why they "cheat" and do it in three. This technique is also used heavily in the Nickelodeon TV series Invader Zim.

What? No stripper chicks? (Reply to this comment)

As long as males in their 40s to 50s are in charge of the media (and control most of the money in the USA), don't look for the idealized female figure to deviate from their own sexual fantasies anytime soon.
On another note, I was at Disney World when Lilo was still in the drawing/animation stage. We went on a special tour into their studios and got to watch a frame or two of Stitch grow from blank paper (from behind a glass observation area, looking over the animator's shoulder). During that time, the guide explained a bit about the concept of the movie and how it differed from typical Disney fare.
It was amazing watching those people; most of them younger, 20s- 30s age types, sitting around at the animation desks, having 3-D sculptures of the various characters all around to use for references. Cool stuff.
Gonna see Lilo tomorrow.

Well done...2 things (Reply to this comment)

being really sensitive to the "broken home" issue, I really get my defenses up if I think this movie has negative stuff about broken homes (imo, homes can't be broken..but that's an editorial I think I may have written!) Secondly, I just came back from Hawaii and you can imagine the hubabaloo this movie is creating. They are hoping it will up tourism since it has been down since 9/11. I enjoyed the review. First one I read on the movie. We were going to see the opening, but never did (in Hawaii) jo

Fluffy usually DOES describe Disney... (Reply to this comment)
by mattygroves
...as you may guess, I'm not usually a Disney fan. Even my daughter (who is 11) seems to have more or less lost interest (but I think that's as much because she wants to be 'cool' as anything else).
This film isn't out in the UK yet, so I knew nothing about it. I know quite a bit now - thanks - perhaps said child would enjoy it. Perhaps not. What do I know (according to child, absolutely nothing!) :)
Cheers,
Kate

I'm glad to see that you enjoyed the movie too! :) I totally agree with you about the animation style. CGI is just been played with way too much, like a brand new toy.
Great Review!

ACK!! See??? People have been brainwashed by "typical" Disney characters. THE MADNESS MUST STOP!
(Whoever knew that Disney influenced so much of our lives?)
I like buttered popcorn but the popcorn at Century sucks. I actually like the popcorn from the dollar theater the best- it's only $1.50 a bag too.
I thought the boyfriend was kinda dippy. I was wondering how they were going to incorporate Nani's boyfriend into the mix, considering it's a broken family and Nani's kinda young...
I would like to see more of Stitch. I think I feel an itch to buy a Stitch plush animal coming on...(I'll add him to my odd assortment of other Disney characters I had deemed to be "cute" at some point)

Random Thoughts (Reply to this comment)

1) What's your usual junkfood? Mine is chemically buttered popcorn and a big ole Diet Coke with lots of ice.
2) I thought that the boy friend was kind of lame although his hair was kind of cute. I would have played with it.
3) I hope that Disney makes something else with Lilo & Stitch in it. They're so cute!
4) As we were walking out of the movie theater, I actually heard a man say the following, That Nani was large for a woman, wasn't she. I made sure to give him a nasty look.
SWAK!
Kristina :)
