The Bottom Line If you want a topic area on Guns and Accessories, let Epinions know! Please!

As you get accustomed to the Epinions site, you will notice that not all consumer goods are included. For example, the sportsman will notice a glaring lack of certain sports topics. One such area that could be fruitfully added, because it includes big ticket durable goods (like Cars & trucks!!) is guns and accessories. I have looked high and low around the site to be able to post reviews of quality firearms but to no avail. Therefore, I decided to post it here as a suggestion to the Epinions staff to add the topic area which would certainly bring more traffic and revenue to the site. Win/win situation, right?

Colt AR15 Model SP1

Produced by Colt Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company of Hartford, CT USA, the Colt AR15 Model SP1 was the civilian version of the US Rifle, Caliber 5.56mm, M16.

Although the AR15 series rifle design is "public domain" and has been "cloned" by innumerable manufacturers and sold by myriad marketers, the original is still the best. When you are dealing with a design as venerable as the AR15, which has been the official US Rifle for nearly 40 years, it is inevitable that other manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon to make parts and even complete rifles. Such names as Bushmaster and Olympic have produced complete rifles, as well as Eagle Arms, who produced under their own name as well as the trademark "Armalite" (no relation to the Armalite division of Fairchild Aircraft & Engine that developed the original AR15 design and sold the rights to Colt in 1959).

The Colt SP1 is in my opinion the finest civilian version of the military rifle for several reasons. The SP1 was made by the same manufacturer as the military M16, Colt, on the same production lines as the military rifle. The SP1 was produced from 1964 to 1985, therefore, all Colt SP1 rifles are pre-ban. This refers to the Clinton Administration ban on military semi-automatic weapons dating from September 1994. Simply put, the ban limited production of rifles with pistol grips, bayonet lugs, flashhiders, and detachable magazines of high capacity. All these features are included on the SP1 and are identical to the military rifles. Each part of the rifle is stamped with a "C" to indicate manufacture by Colt. The SP1 contains all the engineering changes made to the US Rifle, M16, including chrome bore and chamber, closed prong flashhider, and buttstock storage trap, which makes the weapon even more durable and useful than the original design.

The SP1 also has none of the superfluous bells and whistles that have been grafted on to the basic design by the military that have made the weapon less effective, heavier, and more unwieldy, such as the forward assist, heavy barrel, heavier receiver, longer, heavier stock, faster rifling twist, less durable sights, and so on.

The basic SP1 is a rifle that combines all of the features the US Carbine, Caliber 30 M1 was prized for (except for the anemic cartridge that plagued the 30 Carbine): Short overall length for convenient use in vehicles, hard hitting accurate cartridge, detachable magazine, ease of operation and maintenance.

The Colt AR15 SP1 has a 20" barrel, with 1 in 12 inch rifling twist. This means the bullet makes one complete turn in twelve inches of flight, thus providing stability for long range accuracy. The caliber is 5.56 millimeter or .223 Remington in civilian parlance. The 223 Remington boasts a 55 grain boattail bullet at 3,200 feet per second muzzle velocity. The same ammunition in Army nomenclature is M193 Ball, 5.56 mm. Either ammunition is interchangeable and may be fired in your SP1. In addition, there is a wide variety of factory ammunition produced by Remington, Federal, and Winchester that will serve all foreseeable needs such as hunting, target shooting, and sport shooting.

The magazines produced before 1994 are either 20 or 30 round capacity. There are also 5 round Colt magazines produced for hunting where capacity is restricted by local ordinance. Newer magazines are 10 round capacity or less. The SP1 accepts all Colt or military surplus magazines interchangeably.

Shooting the Colt SP1 is a joy for any shooter, as the recoil is negligible and the accuracy is superb. One minute of angle accuracy (1 inch or less group spread) is common with the Colt SP1. Highly tuned versions of the Colt AR15 take top honors at the military rifle championships that were formerly dominated by the US Rifle, Caliber 30 M1 and M14.

If you are a connoisseur of fine firearms, you owe it to yourself to obtain one of these classic rifles. Always remember to obey the four rules of gun safety:

1. All firearms are loaded.
2. Never point your weapon at something you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4. Be sure of your backstop, guns can shoot through things.
