The reason the letterbox bars are grey is to prevent burn-in when viewing 16:9 images on 4:3 monitors.
You can change the grey letterbox bars to black by using the service menu (accessed by using the panel mounted control, not the remote).
You'll need at least the version 4XX firmware to do this.. since you have a DirecTV dish it may have upgraded itself already.
