Sorryfor the long delay in replying. Yes, you can find DVD players that support MP3 file playback. Apex and Aiwa make them. I personally own an AIWA DV370 and it plays MP3 files just fine.
There are a couple of rules though for mp3 collections on the CDRoms...\
1) NO WAVs or it will ignore any and all mp3 files on the disk!
2) Single session only; you cannot close and reopen the CD to plop more files in later.
3) Max of 128 files on the disc. I've broken this rule and found the DVD unable to see even most of the files for some reason. It is probably a bug in the DVD program.
4) there is a max Bitrate, though I forget what it is. It's pretty high so it shouldn't be a problem.
Sound quality is fine. It beats laying out several hundred feet of wire to hook up the computer. I've had moderate success getting mp3s into the stereo using the DV 370. Like I said, there are some rules to follow in order to use the capability.

Thanks for taking the time to share this valuable information. I have a question for you MajorWombat. Do you know anything about DVD players that support MP3 files? I would love to be able to play my mp3 files on my stereo. What do I need to know before I buy?

I hate spending money on something I know nothing about and dvd players have been in that category. The info about the different connectors was particularly useful; that was one of the sticky points for me. I'm confident I'll own a dvd player within a week. Thanks!

There was alot of information that I as a first time DVD player shopper have found very useful.
Now I won't go in and just be directed towards what the salesman wants me to buy.
