Of course, I do disagree but that's the beauty of Epinions. I'm not as much of a fan of Surfacing as I am of this album. That again, is just me being myself and for that matter strange and not really much of a fan of female performers. I've tried to learn more about female singers, but haven't found myself overly impressed by most. Still getting my feel wet. Still, I do think this to be 5/5 stars. Period :)
Shelly.

lambchops throws me a curve.... (Reply to this comment)

I would not even blink had a new writer or maybe someone much younger handed Fumbling five stars. But coming from you, I'm surprised. Flawless? I'm now wondering just how much music you listen to on the chick side.
I have this CD, and I like it, I like it a lot, but it's like three and a half.... maybe four stars at best.
I know everyone has their own opinions, their own ideas of what is great, but five stars should be reserved for truly great albums, strong in every category.
Sarah McLachlan's silence on the Karma album (Delerium) is probably better than anything she did here. So maybe this is the part where I give my reason for feeling that fumbling falls short. The writing, sure this album is polished, the recording is high quality (rare for a commercial release) and soothing, but lyrically, it's average, sometimes good, but never great.
Her follow up was even stronger (in my opinion) so does that make surfacing five and a half stars?
You did a great job of describing the album, and your feelings for it, but I don't think you showed it to be worthy of the highest rating possible.

I Wonder..... (Reply to this comment)

if Sarah's song Ice Cream was inspired by the Wallace Stevens poem that contains the line "the only emperor is the emperor of ice cream?" Just a thought.
Wonderful review of a seminal album.

you review a CD I have -- not only do I have it, but I left it in a rental car and immediately bought a replacement.
Does yours have an unlisted, acoustic version of "Possession" after the title cut? my old one did, but my new one doesn't...
Perfect is an understatement!

For a little ice cream right about now. Speaking of which, I remember seeing a video for "Ice Cream" once. It was a long time ago though...
