Cerwin-Vega AVS-632 Home Theater Speakers - Affordable Voluptuous Sound

Written: Jun 28 '02 (Updated Jun 28 '02)
Pros:Clear, crisp, powerful sound. Nice, compact design. Affordable.
Cons:For the price? None.
The Bottom Line: It's hard to beat the quality and performance from these speakers - especially considering how inexpensive they are...

Cerwin-Vega indicates that the 'AVS' in their home theater speaker package dubbed the AVS-632 stands for 'Audio Video System'. But after you hear, feel and experience the sounds this speaker set up can produce, you too will realize that the AVS really should stand for Affordable Voluptuous Sound.

Cerwin-Vega has been producing audio/video products for decades now - and they've always been known for producing high-quality speakers at affordable prices. Now, with their AVS-632 Home Theater Speaker System, everyone can have access to pure, digital sound without spending a fortune.

One of the most important aspects of any home theater or stereo system are the speakers - hands down. You can spend a fortune on your receiver, have the later CD-juke box changer, or the cutting edge progressive scan DVD player. But none of it will matter if you have sub-par speakers. They are that important to the overall effect and sensation of a home system.

Unfortunately, speakers can often be the most expensive component of a home system - often ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars...a piece! I myself spent over $1,000 on my NHT speakers for my main entertainment area. But when it was time for my brother to hook up a home theater system, he wasn't looking at spending quite as much as I did, yet he didn't want to sacrifice sound over his budget.

After visiting several local electronics stores, we began to hear the 'buzz' about the AVS-632. Once we sampled them in a closed environment with our own test CD (Rush of course) we realized that we were hearing some vibrant, robust sounds that really filled the room. Upon some other tests with DVDs and DTS settings, we realized that these speakers easily performed at the level of speakers 10 times their price.

It was an easy sell, but we didn't really exploit the performance of the AVS-632 until we set them up to his Yamaha receiver. With the mounting brackets and tilt brackets which come on the 4 main speakers and the center speaker, it was a breeze setting the speakers up. Additionally, they come with their own 16 gauge cabling, making the set up effort that much easier.

The sounds were incredible, the bass was explosive, the highs were clear, and there was little distortion even at high volumes. Hard to believe we could get such performance from a set of six speakers that ran under $300 complete.

As for the speakers themselves, all of the components are fully shielded to prevent magnetic interference with video sources. Each speaker comes in a compact stylish design and is finished in a neutral graphite color. Their size, their style and their performance make them the easy choice for anyone looking for incredible sound without spending an incredible amount of money.
