A perfect solution to a drafty room.
Written: Jan 23 '01 (Updated Jan 23 '01)
Pros:Safety shut-off, warm, small
Cons:Could tip over easily
The Bottom Line: This is a great space heater for any chilly area. It puts out a lot of heat very quickly.
Lakewood Radiant Ribbon Heaters are great for heating drafty rooms, garages, basements and much more. I wrote review on Lakewood Oil Filled heaters a few months ago. We have an appliance, heat and a/c company. When a customers' furnace breaks and we don't have a part in stock to repair it right away, we leave a heater with the customer until we can fix their heat.
We never used a radiant heater for our customers because they are a ribbon type heater and the front casing gets hot which could cause a safety hazard for customers who have small children or are elderly. Last weekend, my husband called needing more heaters. With the extreme cold weather we are having this winter, we have more furnaces out than ever and have already lent out our Lakewood oil filled heaters. I went directly to Wal*Mart to get a couple more but they were out of all brands of oil filled heaters. They only had kerosene and radiant heaters so when I seen the Lakewood name on the radiant heaters, I knew they would be good quality so I chose this model.
The Lakewood model 310 is 1500 watts of fan forced heat. It has a temperature switch that allows you to set the desired heat setting and it has a thermostat which will cut off when the desired temperature is reached, then cut on again when the room starts getting cool. This heater features a safety shut-off. If the heater is tipped over or gets too hot, it will automatically cut off and a red light on the front of the heater will come on to let you know that the heater has shut off for safety reasons, rather than the automatic thermostat shutting it off. The ribbons heat up and glow red, while a fan forces the heat out and quickly heats any area. It also has a little metal carry handle that makes it easy to move from room to room.
This heater is very compact in size, the cabinet is 12" x 19" x 9" and weights 10 lbs. The cabinet is made of baked enamel steel that resists scratches and dents. I have found that all Lakewood brand products are very durable although I will update this review once the heaters have been carried around in the work trucks for a couple weeks.
I would recommend Lakewood Radiant Ribbon Heaters to anyone needing a small compact space heater that doesn't take up much space but heats quickly. I would not recommend it for use if small kids or pets are around because it is very easy to accidently kick it over and the cabinet does get hot.
