Intro:
Super Mario Bros. shaped gaming as we know it! I remember leaving my NES on for weeks on end, in an attempt to beat the game. Ah, these were the fondest memories.
Take a journey with me down memory lane...
Storyline:
Mario and Luigi, two brothers from Brooklyn, New York, are two plain-old working plumbers. They make all their customers as happy as can be. One day, strange and spooky happenings drive the brothers into inspecting their pipes to see what's up.
As they journey down into the pipes, they find odd creatures blocking the water way. As they finish clearing all of the creatures out, they hear a rather different noise, coming from one awkwardly big "green" tube.
Before they know it, the 2 brothers are sucked down through the tube, to Mushroom Land. What their unaware of is that Mushroom Land used to be their former home. As the still shaken brothers walk up to the Mushroom King, he tells them of his daughter, Princess Peach Toadstool, that has been kidnapped by King Bowser Koopa (aKa Bowser), the Mushroom King's long time enemy. When the King asks for help, the brothers unwillingly agree.
As the bros. start to search for the Princess, they discover that they can use the pipes to warp to and from different areas. They also learn they can even get special powers to enhance there size and abilities. The now-Super Mario Bros have an even better chance of finding the princess. It's here that the real adventure begins...
Gameplay:
Super Mario Bros. gameplay revolutionized games as we know them today. SMB is a side-scroller, which basically means that you view the game from it's side, and the game scrolls from side-to-side. This style of gameplay is what paved the way for more sophisticated games.
SMB level's are setup with objects to manuver around, and platforms to jump on. The objects are usually turtles and hamburger's with feet; the platforms are clouds, hills, and other various objects.
Basically, there's 1 player mode, or 2 player mode. 1st play plays as Mario, and 2nd player plays as Luigi. In 1 player mode, it's just you playing against what Bowser can throw at you. This mode is also good if you've forgot the whole concept of taking turns.
In 2 player mode, it's you and your friend, sharing turns. You play then your friend plays, and so on. It's the same as 1 player, except you have to share. :P
There's also over 7 worlds that will have you and your friends playing for weeks. I remember burning precious electricity leaving my NES on 24/7, for atleast 2 weeks straight; in hopes of beating the game. At the end, there's one big all-out brawl against Bowser. You win, you beat the entire game. It's just that simple. :)
Overall, it's hella hard to get used to the simple, but complex gameplay. It takes a long time to be skilled enough to finish each level untouched. I inheritted that skill after about 3 months of gameplay. :)
Graphics:
The graphics in SMB are what you'd call "crap" now-a-days, but back when NES just came out, the graphics were innovating the whole golden age of video games. I personally enjoy the "cartoony" graphics of SMB. It adds an edge to it that's unexplainable. It just makes SMB the best game ever.
Sound: 10/10
Who can't remember the techno based, catchy tunes of SMB. If you've fallen on you head in the years between then and now, check out my profile page. The most famous theme is there, just for your listening enjoyment.
When I mentioned techno based, I mean that there's a lot of percussion imbedded in the catchy little tunes. There's also alot of clips of notes in the music to make it sound new age. All in all, the sound in SMB is some of the best tunes I've heard in years. A perfect 10/10
Controls: 10/10
The controls in SMB are as simple as they come. On the NES controller, A is action/speed, and B is Jump. Overall SMB's controls are learned in under a minute. But remember, the buttons are sensitive. If you hold down the jump button Mario/Luigi will jump their full jump, but if you tap, or hold and release B fast, he'll jump about halfway.
Availibility: 3/10
The one and only downside to SMB is that it's very rare. I would suggest finding it at the local "used" game store. If you can't find any stores around, you could also try online at Half.com or Ebay.com.
Overall Recommendation:
In my opinion, Super Mario Bros. is the greatest game in Game History. The side-scroll view, the perfect graphics, and cathcy, classic tunes. I suggest that you buy an Nintendo Entertainment System at all costs, and buy Super Mario Bros. You'll definitely enjoy it. You have my word!
Thanks for hearing me out! -Happy Gaming
