| tommy_lop's Full Review: Super Mario Bros. 2 for Nintendo |
I got this one several years ago from an uncle for my birthday, while I rented it several times I never got past the 2nd stage. Well it's been several years since then and I have probably beaten this about a million times.
All though this is the black sheep of the family, and probably considered the least popular of the Mario games it has it's share of remakes and ports. It also has made it's mark on the Mario video game series by having more then one of the enemies in this game reappear in other Mario games, and the whole prospect of hitting enemies with vegetables appeared more then once in the cartoon series.
Oh one last thing if your wondering why the heck the game play in Mario Bros. 2 is so loony, it's because it isn’t a Mario game. The original Mario Bros. 2 game in Japan looked and felt like the original Super Mario Bros. game, except it was 10 time tougher. Nintendo afraid that it would be to tough for American audience remade a game with a guy with a turban, except they took him out and put in the Mario Bros. Thus the Mario Bros. 2 was born.
Story.
One night while sleeping Mario had a nightmare about going into a new land and which a voice called for help to be freed from the villain Wart. Mario woke up and he and his friend's went to a nearby cave. In the cave was a strange door, when Mario open the door it lead to the land he had dreamt of.
Graphic's.
When it comes to remakes of the Mario Bros series, Mario Bros. 2 is often the most messed with (inless it's a complete graphic remake of the original Mario Bros. game that is.). The original Mario Bros 2 game doesn’t look half has nice has the SNES, or GBA versions. But at the time the graphic's where a huge step up from the original Mario Bros. game.
The characters are fairly well drawn, and for the first time we sought a completely different sprite for Luigi then for Mario. Of course it's not without it's problems the background's are sparsely decorated, and the characters move clumsily. Also the super jump glow look's exactly like the invincibility, and there is no sound effect to know when it's gone off, so it's tuff to say whether you can super jump. Another thing that isn’t kept in any of the remakes of the game. but it's a cute bug. The bug is this when your characters get shrunk, there don't get shrunk either. So you get a character with a small body with a big head.
Sound.
You get some fairly unmairo brotherish music in the game, however it keep's up with the rather unmarioish game play. Of course the best thing I have to say about the NES version compared to the GBA version is this. No voices, that's right no annoying digitized voices for everything you do. You get the boing, bleeps, and bloops of classic Mario Bros. games. It also means you don't have to hit the mute button every time you select Toad.
Gameplay.
The gameplay is rather simple for the most part, just like Super Mario Bros. get to the end of the stage. Of course this isn’t has easy, has now you can climb upwards, downwards, etc. There are a few stages that uses this to form mazes but there nothing really to complex.
Also another change from Super Mario Bros is the fact that you no longer stomp on your enemies, instead you pick up vegetables and toss them at them. To make your selection bigger you also can pick up certain enemies and throw them, along with POW blocks which kill every enemy on the screen. Another thing added was the super jump, by holding down on the control pad your character would start to glow, this allowed him to jump higher then he usually would.
Charecters.
Unlike most other Mario Bros game in this game you can select a character to play has, these are the choices you have.
Mario.
Mario has no disadvantages but no real advantages either. Is jump and run really don't change when holding an item, and he can pick up heavy item's relatively fast.
Luigi.
Mario's taller pro takes a while to pick up heavier items, and runs fairly slow with them. Is jump takes a hit if he's caring an item. Of course when he is not charring an item is jump is higher then anybody else.
Toad.
Toad got a really poor jump, however the rest of his statuses are great. He can run faster with an item then anybody else, his jump doesn’t decrease while holding an item, and he can pick up items in an instance.
Princess Toadstool
Stat wise she's the worse. She's 3rd in jumping and last in everything else. However what makes her useful is the fact that she can glide, making her jump's go further then even Luigi. This can be handy to find a few shortcuts's through stages like 4-3, where you can just glide from the beginning of the stage to the end.
Final recommendation.
While it's nothing like it's prequal and sequel it's still a classic Mario Bros. game. If you can't find the NES version then you should give the SNES all star version a looking, and if your desperate the GBA will do fine to.
