In the spring of 2002, I started shopping around for a new Nikon SLR camera and lenses to replace my aging Minolta manual focus setup. I am what a marketer would call a "price-sensitive" customer. In other words, I shop very aggressively to try and find the best deal I possibly can. For me, there's no worse feeling than buying something only to find it cheaper somewhere else.
For about a month, I scoured the internet and local stores trying to decide exactly what I needed and how much those items cost at each of the places. I loaded all of this information into a spreadsheet, and came up with some totals.
Prices on the N80 were very variable. Prices on the 2 sigma lenses I wanted were much less variable. I found some incredible prices on the N80 body, but then I started to read reviews on epinions about the places that were offering these outrageous prices, and I started to have some second thoughts. This was going to be a big purchase, and I started to get cold feet about going to the cheapest store.
In the end I narrowed down my choices to either B&H or Abes of Maine. Prices for the entire setup came out to be within 25$ of each other, so I decided to go with B&H only because their epinions record was blemish free.
I ordered my camera, lenses, photo bag, filters, batteries, and a "how-to" videotape on June 27th. I was promised shipment on July 2nd. The ordering process was relatively painless (I didn't need to ask any questions, I had already done all my research) though the phone line quality was awful and it was tough to hear the salesman.
On July 1st, one day *ahead of the promised date* I received all my stuff. Everything was professionally packed, brand new, and US warrantied (no gray market surprises). I was very happy to find the filters I ordered (not knowing the brand) were real tiffen filters, not some off brand glass. All the small items were packed in their own bag, and everything was factory sealed.
I would highly reccommend B&H. Even though you might find things cheaper at other fly by night places, consider carefully whether it's really worth the potential savings!
