DirectTV Satellite
Written: Nov 14 '02
This system has to be one of the best satellite systems out on the market. Please note I don't own this system but I know about it from seeing it used at differnt places. Also I am not affilated with Direct T.V. Please don't hold me liable if the info here does not pertain to your needs.
Setup: If you want to make a project on a weekend then go to your local Frys and buy the Directtv with the Huges reciver don't go with RCA their receivers tend to be hard to use. Stop now if you have back problems or you are scared of heights call Direct T.V. for professional assistance. I will only go into self-setup.
Self Setup: You will neeed 2 people and I mean 2 one inside one on the roof. You will first need to read through the informative manual and watch the informative video before proceeding. Ok after all this then go ahead and get your tools and get a sturdy ladder up to the roof. Now its time to use the Never Eat Shredded Wheat method to determine a clear position to the south sky. You cannot have tall trees or huge obstructions blocking your view. Next is to install the brakcets and secure the sattelite.
Ok. Now its time to run the LNB wire and make sure your house had cable type connections in every room you bought a reciver for and hook it up to the back of these boxes. You will run a coaxial cable to each t.v. Before this the second person will need to be at a t.v and have it set via the menu settings or select a channel to see the coordinates a walkie talkie is good for this part of the installation as the corrdinates have to match. You will hear fast beeps when it is fully installed. Wait on the roof until the second person can get the Direct T.V. promotional channels and a little box that says call the 1800 number for setup. Ok so now all your t.v.s are connected to the boxes I will take you through the nex step of the setup.
Connecting your recievers:
Connect your boxes to a landline phone line to activate the access card that you must install into each reciver. Let me warn you if you remove this card it will become deactivated and you will need to call Direct TV to get a new one. Sometimes they upgrade the service and give you a new access card. Now call directtv and select the package you want and within an hour or so you will see a message on your t.v in the customer settings welcoming you to direct t.v. Before this happens you will need to selcet activate access card and then it will start activating within a few seconds. You can also use the S-Video or the cable t.v connection to your t.v. Be sure to get local channels or purchase an a/b switch for each t.v and connect it to each t.v. You will have instructions on how to connect the reciver to the v.c.r for recording shows.
Audio:Now connect the main system to your radio system to be able to hear the audio via your home sound system. Ok almost there a little side note you can turn on the audio and turn off the t.v to listen to the music channels.
PPV:Sometimes the reciver will call a toll-free number at night to update your ppv purchases and to update the system always have the phoneline connected. You may need an electrican or the phone company to install jacks. The system will keep redialing until a connection is made. If you hear modem sounds if you pick up the phone it may be the reciver connecting to Direct t.v.
T.V.Guide: The on screen t.v. guide tells you shows up to 24 hours. You can automatically have your t.v. turn on a program or send it to your v.c.r if it is compatabile with your system. The extra cost for the printed guide is ok but if you want to save a bit then you can go online to www.tvguide.com.
Upgrading Service: You call the direct t.v. phone number and they will process your order and send you a new access card. YOu will then need to send back the old access card for security purposes.
So the only big con is if there is a storm you will loose reception for some time.
Be sure to ask about Direct T.V. DSL. The only disadvantage is you need a modem for uploads.
