Pros:inexpensive, pretty good photo quality, fast for b&w
Cons:uses a lot of expensive ink
The Bottom Line: Be sure to consider total cost, including ink, when considering this otherwise inexpensive printer. Over time, this C60 will be very expensive to operate.
I see there are many other reviews focusing on the quality of the printer -- I agree that this is a good printer that is versatile, fast and does a pretty good job. I'll let those reviews stand on their own. My review focuses on one aspect which I did not consider when I purchased but which I think is salient: the "total cost of ownership".
The printer is inexpensive at $80 and if you take into account that it comes with a set of ink cartridges that retail for $53 (!!) you are actually only paying $27 for the printer. Clearly Epson isn't making any money on the hardware. So the first thing to know is that replacing the two cartridges (B&W + color) will set you back more than $50, and that's if you can find these cartridges. Whoa!
Next consider that in my unscientific studies, the C60 drinks ink. It's a little hard to compare because my previous printer was an HP 540, which printed only in black. But it seemed to me that I could print for three to six months before replacing the (single) cartridge on the HP. It now seems that I am replacing cartridges much more frequently. To be fair, there are two cartridges, and the printer can determine which one needs replacement, so it may just be that I am replacing one then the other. Regardless, I have had the printer about six months, and I am now working on my 8th cartridge (4 color, 4 b&w) where with the HP I would be working on my 2nd cartridge. So I have paid $200 to Epson for ink and $27 for the printer :-)
So this is just a data point for printer buyers out there. It may well be that all of the printer companies are moving to this different business model of selling expensive ink in cartridges that are not interchangeable. But it's worth looking around to see if there may be equally good printer options, or even more expensive printers that use less ink.
Hope this is helpful!
