Being an entertainer/companion in a ALF...... (Reply to this comment)
by Susie-34668
I work with the elderly and hopefully put a smile on their faces.
The 'children' of the residents thank me all the time for making their lives brighter. To me this is not work but pure pleasure. I just wish I could help all the people in your situation. It is so hard.
Take care,
Susan.

Great advice... (Reply to this comment)

my parents are dealing with this right now with my grandfather and it is hard. I think you have some great words of wisdom about dealing with a parent or relative with Alzheimers.

This is a very poignant post. I commend you for sharing this difficult slice of your life. I'm glad you have a support group.
You give some very specific, important advice. Thank you -- while it doesn't apply to my family right now, it might in the future.
Blessings.

This was beautifully written (Reply to this comment)

My father is in the process of having his advanced dementia diagnosed as Alzheimer's. My friend's mother died of the disease and she said she felt that Alzheimers was like a "living death" - she had been grieving for her "real" mom for years. Terribly sad. This review has some excellent advice and offers so much.
Thanking for sharing your personal experience as tough as that must have been.

I've lost my Mom and Dad but my wife still has her Mom and she might have problems like this too. Also, I'm an attorney who acts as Attorney-ad litem for people with Alzheimers and I have never read a better way to work with folks. Thank you for sharing.

I know where your comin' from... (Reply to this comment)

I helped my Mom take care of my Grandmother for a year and a half until she died from cancer. The cancer was a field day compared to the Alzeimer's she was also afflicted with. She never knew who I was and denied I was her grandson because in her mind her grandson was still just a 12 year old little boy. All those who care for people cursed with Alzeimer's will stay in my prayers for the remainder of my life.

and very touching. Thanks for sharing.
I wrote a piece on aging and ageism that you might like to read. It's about how to treat OLD people before they get sick.
