"Bye Bye Love"
Written: Jan 24 '01 (Updated Jan 24 '01)
Pros:Looks better organized
Cons:Looks 'cute' but is vacuous, no comments, sterile, bugs BIGTIME!
The Bottom Line: Sometimes new isn't necessarily improved. I miss the personality and sense of community of the old site.
I tried. I was even uncharacteristically patient. But I feel a loss not unlike the death of a best friend.
I definitely do NOT like the new epinions structure as I feel it is more like some of the other cold dot com sites where products are just summarily listed and there is no sense of community or personality to the site.
Gone are the wonderful personality profiles that had so many cute pictures and cartoons that I enjoyed when reading a new writer's epinion. I absolutely HATE that I cannot leave a comment on ANY epinion written which was what I looked forward to reading on my epinions. I also loved leaving comments for my fellow writers since most put so much into their reviews.
Since the change I have experienced so many bugs in the 'new and improved' system. I have written a review of a movie that STILL hasn't shown up in my total number of reviews written nor has it been listed at the top of my reviewed list, so that when others search to see what else I have written, my last review shows as 3 weeks old!!!
I also doubt an email alert has been sent to those who wished to be notified of any new writings by me. They would have to KNOW the exact title or the movie I reviewed to even find it! To date, no one who has asked to be notified has either read or rated the opinion (on the movie Antitrust).
When I contact epinions, I got a long email after 3 days that basically said my epinion was there and anyone looking to read movie reviews of that particular movie would see it, but that there was a BUG preventing it from showing on my epinions list. Too bad, so sad. Not even an apology, or a 'we are working on it'.
Epinions is most likely going to die a slow death as those most loyal to epinions seem to be leaving. I, too, am profoundly disappointed and wonder why I should even write an epinion if it is basically hidden from those on my WOT who have asked to see what I have written, or from new members who might wish to get to know my writings better by viewing past reviews.
Joni Mitchell was right. "Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got till it's gone. They paved Paradise and put up a parking lot!"
I miss the paradise community of the recently departed epinions I loved so much.
