It Never Turns off!
Written: Jul 11 '02 (Updated Jul 11 '02)
Pros:None!
Cons:Fire Hazard
The Bottom Line: Fire hazard! thing never shuts off.
We received this toaster oven from my husbands granny, she claimed it never warmed up, being that she is 90 I honestly didnt 100% believe her, she has a habit of wanting things to happen faster than they are supposed to...anyway to make her happy we said OK... we will take this one and get you a different model.
We brought it home, it was basically new, the only thing I noticed was there were what appeared to be smoke or burn marks on the front right under the door. I blew it off to thinking maybe at one time she had torched a honey-bun or something...ya know the 90 year old thing. Well weeks went by it got hot when we turned it on and cooled down when we turned it off, just like any toaster oven out there. Then one night while warming tortilla's in it, I noticed the top burner coils were not on, I told my husband his Granny was right after all it wasn't warming right. Being an electrician he poked at it a bit and got them going. The next morning I used it to cook Eggos for our kids...this time the lower coils weren't getting hot. I told my husband it was still on the blink, he turned it on and VIOLA! all coils top and bottom lit up.
That night we again used it for warming tortillas (my husbands main staple in his diet) and that baby fired RIGHT UP...except this time it wouldnt cool down, normally toaster ovens have a thermostat to turn them off when it hits a certain temp...just like any oven.
This thing just kept on going. I turned it off after 10 minutes of BLAZING coils and high temps, the cord was melted in the back, it was like a kiln you fire pottery in!
Later that night (well after it was cooled and unplugged) it was still popping from the high heat. We have since dumped that beast.
I wonder just how many others have this problem? I called the manufacture and they told me there was no recall and being it was a gift we couldnt get a refund...not that I wanted one mind you, I just wanted Toastmaster to be aware of this problem.
So perhaps this was a fluke? and I just happened to get a firey dud? I wanted to share this with you all, JUST in case!
