| tommy_lop's Full Review: Super Castlevania IV for Super Nintendo |
This is one of the first games I had played for the SNES, and I can say it was the most impressive. I had only played Castlevania 3 before this, and this was the 2nd outing. The sounds where great and the graphics where smooth and even though it was still the same game play for the NES it was still fun.
Story.
Every 3 months (oh come on if it was 100 years then where's Og and Lando Belmont) Dracula raises from is grave and a Belmont had to stop it. Now this one features Simon Belmont, and all though there hasn’t been many Castlevania games with him in it in the last several years, he still is the Belmont with the most games. A lot of people are confused whether this continues the story set in the first 2 Castlevania or whether it's just a remake, I say who cares just has long has I can whip vampire butt.
Graphics.
Now this is probably the most graphically impressed I have been with a Castlevania game, sure symphony of the night had some pretty cool graphics but it just didn’t have the personality this game has. The backgrounds have movement and Konami used this ability to make the castle look haunted in an evil kooky Hogwarts sort of way. There's moving books, paintings, and skeletons in the background. And who can forget the tower room where the background rolls like a spinning barrel.
Then there comes now this comes up a big step up from the 2 frame animation of Trevor Belmont. Simon is a fairly big sprite with detailed and smooth animation. Anyway's the graphics are something to look at even for today.
Sound.
Classic Castlevania music is abound, there is a lot of background music that I recognize from the 3rd but it is now more instrumental. The first level theme always gets stuck in my head, the music here is very transvania and catchy.
Gameplay.
For those people who say that the new Castlevania's for the GBA and symphony of the night are like classic Castlevania games are full of beans. I am not saying that there bad games, in fact I like them, there just not classic Castlevania. Classic Castlevania was linear, there was no item purchasing, no leveling up, and whatever it was it wasen't Metroid.
The game is relatively simple to understand who go around whipping undead bad guys and grab power up's. Don't get hit and don't fall down the holes and you'll pretty much survive.
Of course the big thing that impressed Castlevania freaks was the fact Simon could whip in different directions and uses his whip to swing from rings to rings. Of course this makes the game just a bit to easy, Castlevania 3 was a pretty challenging game with incredible difficulty from the beginning, Castlevania 4 you won't break a sweat till at least the 8th stage.
There are also special items Simon could grab that could be used to attack from a far. These items of course required hearts in order to use but they are definitely useful in tight spots.
Knife. This can be thrown fast and straightforward but it's not very powerful, I usually skip this one.
Axe.
This one can be very useful for attacking enemies from overhead. Getting rid of enemies on top of stairs and pesky bats. The axe can be thrown in a arch and it's fairly powerful it's a pick up if you don't have a cross.
Watch.
The watch stops everything for a couple of seconds, but it doesn’t work on big enemies or bosses. It also takes a lot hearts, while it can be useful the fact that it's render useful in a lot of situations makes it one that should be skipped.
Holy Water.
While not very powerful on most enemies the water can be lethal to big and slow moving enemies. When dropped the water will explode into a red fire burning any enemies that step in it.
Boomerang.
Here's one for Nintendo censors, Anyway’s if you can't tell what vampire repelling instrument this is then your an idiot. Anyway's the boomerang maybe a little slow but it does a huge amount of damage to anything it hit's. This is a weapon for all occasions.
Rosery.
While the Boomerang was changed the Rosery manage to make it in go figure. Grabbing this causes a flash of light across the screen killing all enemies on the screen.
Final recommendation.
While not challenging has it's predecessor, 4th makes up with solid game play and some great graphics. Defiantly worth a pick up.
