Preamble
One of my favorite places to shop is the brick & mortar version of Kohl’s. Obviously, when Kohl’s threw themselves up a web site, I was there, soaking it all in.
Kohl’s The Company
Kohl's was founded by the Kohl family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1962. Predominantly known as a department store in the Midwest, Kohl’s has expanded to almost 400 stores and has reached out to the Northeast and Southwest areas. It’s currently traded publicly and despite the recession, they continue to do better than many other department stores.
What can you find at Kohl’s? All sorts of neat things. Clothing for men, women, and children, shoes, jewelry, home stuff (dishes, small appliances, bathroom accessories) and all sorts of other things. Kohl’s is one of my favorite places to shop both for the quality of their clothing (I’m a Sag Harbor Career Collection junkie) and for their fabulous sales.
Kohl’s The Website
When you enter the home page, you instantly recognize the Kohl’s signature burgundy logo. Sure, the logo is nice but the best thing about Kohl’s homepage is that I don’t need to dig and investigate things that I usually have to search for on other web sites. For example, if I want to know what current promotion is going on – it’s right there on the home page. It’s not hidden and it’s not obnoxious. How refreshing is that? And to top it off, you can pretty much count on the brick and mortar stores and the web site carrying the same promotion at the same time.
Unlike some other department store’s web sites, Kohl’s is SOOO much easier to navigate. There is usually only one main picture on the page while the other space is used for meaningful things. Yep, that’s right. Every thing I want to know is smack dab on the front page. Across the top are their main, eight departments (Women’s, Junior’s, Men’s, Kid’s, Homestore, Clearance, Gift Shop, Gift Registry). Across the bottom of the screen is some of that other stuff that occasionally you seek out before shopping – careers, their policies, your account, etc….
Let’s say, just for the heck of it, you want to buy clothes for you. After you click on Women’s, the next page displays a list of more specific options on the left side while 2/3 of the screen is nicely filled with some promotional item.
When you select a product to view, you’ll get a very clear picture, price (and whether or not it’s on sale), a description of your product, applicable size chart to the product, you’re shown swatches of all the various colors, AND you can select to see an “alternative view” of the product. PHEW! Yes, all on one page. But you know, it’s still a very clean, crisp layout, not busy like you might imagine.
Pardon me while I gush. You can click on the item and see it very close – so close that you can see the fibers. How cool is that?! And then, if you click on one of the swatches, a window pops up to show you exactly what your product would look like in that color. Who’s laughing at me now? Well folks, it’s the small things that count with me.
Ordering is easy. Click on your item, and it adds it to your cart. Another neat feature! If the color/size combination you want isn't in stock, they alert you right there on the screen. Once you've decided what to do about that particular dilemma, you can continue shopping or head to the checkout.
Selection
I have to tell you. The first thing I do when I log in to Kohl's is head to the clearance section. Whoo wee the things I get at rock bottom prices!!! I've found things like replacement pieces for dishes and good, solid t-shirts that I can wear when I'm working out...it's just one of my favorite places to hang.
If there was one thing I would change about Kohl’s the web site it's that they would have as large of a collection of stuff as what I can find in the brick and mortar store. It's not bad, but since I love shopping here, I'm greedy and I want more!!!
Very Important!!!!
Kristina the bargain shopper here. When you create an account at Kohl’s, you get a benefit of 10% off your first online purchases made. When I mean account, I don’t mean open a credit account. I mean, create an id for yourself and complete those good ole demographics. They don’t even require you to store your credit card information online!
Payment
You can choose to use your Kohl's charge (which of course, I DO!), American Express, Visa, Mastercard, or Novus/Discover. Once you place your order, Kohl's sends you a confirmation statement, acknowledging your order.
Shipping
Every time I’ve shopped at Kohl’s, I’ve always run into a free shopping promotion. It usually ends up being free standard shipping when you spend over $75. Heck! That’s not difficult to do.
And speaking of shipping, I’m amazed at the turnaround time. The longest it has taken for a standard shipping package to get to my house was four days. And that was during the Christmas season! Most times, it comes around the 2-3 day mark.
Just One More Thing To Gush About
You can sign up to be alerted to their online sales. Oh my! I love it when I receive these emails because it reminds me of all of the things I need to buy. At any time, you can remove yourself from the emailing list. But gee, don’t ever do that. You will kick yourself for missing out on a bargain.
