As the manager of an IT department in a financial institution, I have many resources at my disposal for purchasing memory. However, when I need to buy memory for a critical application, I always buy from Crucial.
Crucial does not always provide the lowest price. A quick trip to Pricewatch.com or Shopper.com will show you many lower priced vendors. For example: Crucial sells a standard 512MB DDR PC2100 DIMM for $140.39, which you can find via www.pricewatch.com for as little as $96 with a lifetime warranty. However, when you move up into the more exotic memory, like Cisco router RAM, Crucial gives a great price. Compare Crucial’s 32MB DRAM offering for 1700 class routers is only $18, while Kingston lists at $36.
Crucial ships for free while the low-end vendors mostly don’t. In fact, Crucial ships 2 day FedEx for free and often ships the same day that you place the order. I haven’t found anyone who even comes close to matching that performance.
Aside from all of that, reliability is the #1 reason to choose Crucial. On this point I don’t need to quote any other sources. We have installed Crucial RAM in every single router and server that we operate and have NEVER had a failed part. When you are talking about systems that absolutely have to work, that’s what it is all about.
