| rhuston's Full Review: TrendMicro HouseCall |
We all know that we should have current antivirus protection installed on our PCs, right? However, knowing what we should do and actually doing it are not always one in the same. Enter HouseCall.
HouseCall is a free "online" scanner from Trend Micro. While not the biggest player in the home PC antivirus market, Trend Micro is one of the biggest in the corporate AV world and really does know their stuff.
The HouseCall tool has been provided by them, free of charge. Why? It's all about marketing and frankly, it works. The public loves free things (particularly the computer using public) and while free doesn't always bring visions of high-end quality, this tool is very good at what it does.
HouseCall is a Java application that downloads to your PC when you run it the first time on the TrendMicro web site. Each time you run it, after that, it will download any required updates to itself. This makes the first download fairly lengthy (depending on your Internet connection) but more pleasant after that.
HouseCall is also an on-demand only scanner. This is important because on-demand scanners do not provide real time protection from viruses. They do provide a way to find and remove viruses after they are already on your system or to verify that your current AV protection is doing its job.
While we all hope that we will not be in the position to have to remove a virus from our computers, HouseCall is a great tool to bookmark in case you ever need it. Between it and all the good technical information about virus removal on Trend Micros' site, HouseCall is a powerful tool.
