| SupergoldZero's Full Review: Faceball 2000 for Super Nintendo |
Faceball 2000 was yet another little known game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment system. This could be called the “first” first person shooter for Super Nintendo because in reality, it was. Faceball 2000 had revolutionary 3-D graphics for Super Nintendo and it managed to be a very addicting and satisfying experience as well. This game is also available for Game Boy, but I have no idea how the game boy version played [but it was suppose to be just as good]. The company who made this game ,Xanth Software F/X inc, is oddly out of sight and only made this one little cult classic.
Gameplay- The gameplay this game is very simple. You play as hovering face and you must clear a stage [which is pretty much a small-big sized maze] of a certain number of face balls and then you must head to the exit of the stage and you win. This is the concept of the game mode “Cyberzone”, and as you go on further into the game the larger the stages get, the more faces you must destroy, and the game gets overall harder with the introduction of new faster and meaner faces who only want to see your demise [or in lamer terms the clearing of your 4-hit life bar]. The “Arena” mode of this game allows you to choose what face balls appear in a maze of your choice and then you can go on a giant deathmatch. There is also a secret mode in this game that plays similarly to Cyberzone, but it has more secrets in it. To shoot in this game you must press A, you open power-up pods with B, and you can turn slower with the R/L buttons [or faster if you press R/L with the D-pad as you are turning].
Graphics- This was the first and one of the only true 3-D games for the Super Nintendo and though the 3-D graphics in this game are obviously out-of-date by today’s standards, it was truly an amazing-looking piece of software back in the day of the Super Nintendo. The backgrounds in the game are nice and detailed while the maze interior and the faceball models themselves are lacking and are pretty bland. But the game makes up for it with it fast trigger happy gameplay and the fact it has nearly no slowdown, even with a good amount of faceballs on the screen at once.
Sound- The music in this game is quite interesting and consists of techno. The songs are addicting and can stay in your head forever if you not careful. The songs gives you an interesting feeling as you play this game more and more because of there mysterious tone.
Overall- If you want a classic first person shooter that is not Wolfistien 3-D or Doom then come on down and buy Faceball 2000. This game also supports co-op and Vs. split-screen two-player which is a big plus.
