| keithkennedy's Full Review: HP Pavilion P4 1.8GHz / 120GB / 512MB / Micro towe... |
I purchased this computer package from Comp USA on a special price deal. It came with the tower (which includes:
Windows XP, 1.8 GHz Pentium IV processor, 512 MB SDRAM, box states 80 gig hard drive, but I believe this is a misprint as it actually has over 100 gig, 32 MB graphics card, 16 x 8 x 40 CD-RW, 16X DVD, 4 USB ports with 2 in the front and 2 in the back, IEEE 1394 Firewire port in back, standard HP keyboard, optical mouse, & speakers) There was extensive software pre-loaded on the hard drive (too extensive to list out, but suffice to say more than adequeate to get going). I purchased Office XP and Norton Utilities at additional cost (system comes with an Anti Virus program, however I prefer Norton over Macafee...the only problem I noticed with Norton is that it read the computer professor program as a malicious script so I had to shut it down while running that particular program)
The reason I purchased this computer was to upgrade by old PII 256 megahertz (what a dinosaur....I may as well had a stone tablet with a hammer and chisel). Needless to say this system far out performs my old one.
Pre loaded software is extensive, however I like to have back up software and HP did not include the CD's, but they do state in the package info that they will provide a reload of all included software in the event of system failure. The CD burning software is OK but you may wish to purchase one with more useful features (the one that they have is MusicMatch free version and it promises a really good version if you upgrade for $19.95--I don't know this as I have not upgraded)
I really liked having 2 USB ports located in the front of the unit as this makes it much easier to use the multitude of devices I have with USB interface. 2 more ports in the back that can be used for items that are not switched around a lot like printers and such. I am a real digital photography fan and my camera works well with this system. The firewire ports I do not have any knowledge on other than they are supposed to be faster than USB. There are 2 drawbacks that I have found to be annoying on Windows XP....1) XP will not work with a lot of older programs....especially ones with graphics (windows has included a wizard that helps alleviate this problem, but it works only about 1/2 of the time.
2) The many updates that Windows has put out for XP. It seems that everytime I get on the internet there is an update to download and this takes considerable system resources and I only have dial up internet so it can be a slow process....then you have to restart your system to make the update work. Ness. I supposed but annoying.
The system itself is a great machine, very fast and mostly easy to use. It is useful for the novice user up to the most advanced. I would recommend getting a book or software to learn Windows XP because it is a lot different from the 98 version. Easy to set up right out of the box.
