| trillig's Full Review: Atari 7800 |
First of all, the negative review was only one I read here before composing this.
Speaking to his 5200 love, well Atari designed totally different processors and motherboards/slots for the 5200 vs the 2600, so it would have had to make major mods for 90+ 5200 games?
Instead they made it with better internals with more than the 30 or so 7800 only games expected but, alas a quick death thanks to competition. But it has built in, good 2600 compatibility instead of requiring an adaptor like the 5200 and they upgraded the 7800 with better joysticks.
I do not own a 5200 and never have so I can't comment on it's games.
In my mind, the 7800 is preferred over a 2600 because of the extra games you can play on it and the better joysticks.
The 7800 by the way can use any 2600 controller, it's just if a 7800 game is used, you'll want to swap back to the 7800 controllers because it has 2 action buttons that can be used instead of the 2600's one.
True though, lots of the games are pretty weak, but most can be found for $5 and under.
Dozens of rarer games to collect for a lot more $ but casual players can get a nice collection going pretty cheaply.
I really like the paddle games for the 2600/7800.
With said paddle games, you'll want to buy a set or 2 of paddle controllers ($5-$10 typical price), if you get jittery on screen paddle movements, take out the two screws on both controllers and spray contact cleaner or WD-40 on all the contacts and put back together, that should fix it.
Snag a copy of Steeplechase by Sears and Warlords for party of 4 and let the good paddle game competition commence and let your competition figure out how to play on their own while you trounce them for 15 mins first. 8)
But, I disgress.
Cons on the 7800 is non-standard power supply and the case can't take a punch, just be nice to it!
Overall, I love the 7800! Choose games wisely!
Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, and Galaga are all well done 7800 games in my opinion, and easy to come by/cheap! Asteroids is in color and superior to 2600 version! Visit www.atariage.com for game lists galore!
Only wish it had survived another year for more arcade conversions.
