| endurance's Full Review: MEMPLUG INC. VISADAPTSM MemPlug SmartMedia Adapter... |
I never got into eBooks since I first had a 2mb Palm IIIe, well when I took the plunge for work and fun and picked up my Handspring Prism I had a 8mb PDA, this was great but memory has always been something I wanted lots more of, well this past Feb. for my birthday I took some of the birthday money I purchased 1 SM Memplug and 1 32mb SM card. For about $50 total I walked away with a 40mb PDA.
When I say 40mb PDA I do mean I utilize and operate from all 40mb. With the Memplug it deploys a PalmOS 4.x feature called VFS (Virtual File System) which allows you to add-on memory as if it were part of the current system. Well in PalmOS 4.x programs are automatically added. Which is awesome! However in PalmOS 3.5H VFS is not possible however PiTech has brought VFS to Handspring.
So with my new found freedom I added in programs, and more! I needed to ugprade my launcher from generic Palm launcher to Laucher III (http://www.benc.hr/lnchiii.htm) which allows you to store programs in VFS memory and active and operate programs! It is a great addition. So with that, the memplug, and some eBooks I was on my way.
The memplug comes with some built in applications:
- Backup: Backup Utility
- Mover: Move files to the SM card for storage.
- gMovie: For watching video
- cspotron: a Doc/eBook reader (great auto-scroll feature)
- Viewer: for viewing Images
With these great tools you can utilize lots of great stuff! And now with many applications taking advantage of VFS you can find a lot of applications offering VFS support, like my last Epinion for example WordSmith offers VFS support so you can save your documents to a memory module instead of taking up your onboard PDA memory.
The PDA market continues to expand into a almost 'PC' type handheld. Soon I imagine I will have my PDA CD-Burner, PDA DVD Player, and PDA Rocketpack.... :) I can dream cant I ;)
Its a great buy for any Handspring owner!
