Pros: Great functionality. Cheap. Local Channels (8vsb). Superb 1080i quality display.
Cons: Using 61.5 satellite. Menus look old
The Bottom Line: I don't know what the directv receiver is like. I can't be as good as this!

| crabtrp's Full Review: EchoStar 6000 Digital Satellite System |
I have a 6000 running through a sony 1272q projector producing an 120" hdtv display. The picture quality is stunning and the sound is superb. I have the 8vsb off air decoder ($100), and the local reception is as astounding as the dish content. CBS is broadcasting a large proportion of it's primetime offerings in HDTV (at least in my area) and are increasing the sports coverage. The 6000 produces a strong clear beautiful image on all content way beyond my expectations.
Why Echostar persists with the old graphics on the menus/program guides is beyond me. The DirecTv menus look much more modern. It is a bit of a pain having a second dish pointing to 61.5. They are the only cons I can think of on such a great product.
When I go to Best Buy, Fry's etc. and see all of the 50-60" HDTV televisions for $5000 I get frustrated. I put my 120" HDTV system together for $3700
$1700 for the Sony front projector off eBay (incredible piece of machinery).
$350 for the Echostar 6000 (including installation)
$250 for a DaLite 120" projection screen off eBay.
$500 Sony receiver.
$900 Bose speaker system.
Do yourself a favor, if you have the room (and by this I mean a full room), build your own home theater from scratch.
