You give an "interesting" lesson on "enlarging". If you want to change the size and/or resolution of the image in Adobe, simply choose the crop tool (this is normally a dotted rectangle, hold the cursor on it and choose the most solid looking icon). Then, in the tools box, you can set your desired output size and resolution. Then use the mouse to select the area of the picture that you want then press enter. Adobe will crop, resize, and change the resolution all at once. I use this nearly every day to output to my Sony dye-sub printer, which needs an input file of 2466x1664 pixels at 403dpi. All this can be done in one easy step. And Adobe remembers the last set of criteria you used for the crop tool, so it's always there if you use the same numbers a lot.
As far as saving as jpg... just click on the 'save' (or 'save as' if the file has been saved in another format already) and select JPEG in the file type drop-down box. After giving the file a name, a window will pop up asking you how much you want it compressed. More compression gives a smaller file size, but lower image quality. Higher quality compression gives larger file size and better image quality. However, even a high quality JPEG will be much smaller than an uncompressed TIF file.
Note: You should save in TIF format if you plan on further editing, cropping, or otherwise changing the image at all. Then same to a high quality JPEG when you are done, if you need to. If you save as JPEG multiple times, the quality will be reduced each time regardless of the settings.
