When I moved into my first apartment, my family gave me a hand-me-down Electrolux vacuum. I remember looking at it and remarking that it looked like something from the 1970s, and being appalled to find out that in fact was that old. But I was told that Electrolux vacuums run forever, and this one was no different.
Years later, I still have it, and it's still the best vacuum cleaner I have ever used. That said, I started to get concerned a few weeks ago when I started to run low on my supply of vacuum bags. I thought I would never find bags that would fit this old model. (Not to mention that I found the idea of having to seek out an Electrolux dealer very annoying.)
No bells and whistles, just a simple site
After a short web search, my travels brought me to TotalVac.com. My first thought was, "what an ugly website," and then, "they can't possibly have what I'm looking for here."
It's true, the site's not pretty. The upside is that it's not hard to find what you are looking for. The homepage greets the web surfer with several sections, crudely divided but some old-school web-tables. The first is the largest: A list of brand names where you can click to find vacuum cleaner bags, hoses, belts, filters and parts. (It makes sense that this would be the largest section of the homepage since it is vacuum parts for a vacuum website.)
The following section includes items for sale such as: humidifier and air filter, gas grill parts, sewing machine parts, cleaners, hair and skin care accessories, kitchen appliance parts and more.
Easy to navigate
TotalVac.com is a parts-only website. It might not be a "fun" website to surf but it serves its purpose, and things are easy to find, as they should be on a site such as this.
Other info
There is free shipping on orders over $50. (I actually thought this was a little misleading though - I found them via Google.com, on an ad that claimed free shipping and didn't mention the $50 minimum.) My order total was under $50, so I ended up paying $5.95 on shipping. (Frustrating too because the order totaled around $45 at that point.)
Whether or not this price is a decent price, I am unsure. Considering that I was buying something so old, I felt lucky to be able to find it at all -- I wasn't about to complain about price.
I would think that many consumers on this site feel the same way - some of the parts are old and out of date, and people are willing to pay for something that is hard to find. As far as the more "mainstream" parts, whether or not their prices are competitive, I don't know. Either way, you are paying for a lot of convenience. (Who wants to schlep to the vacuum cleaner parts store that is most likely far away from where you live, when you can order everything right online from the comfort of your office chair?)
Also, they have a mailing list you can join to get updated site information and coupons in your inbox.
My experience
So I found my bags - they actually carried the bags since Electrolux had the same kind of bags for years and I was able to order a box set of 100. I was told that my credit card would be charged only when the shipment went out. I was also told that I would receive an email confirming this. I did not receive the email - I received a confirmation of my order, but was not alerted to when it was sent out.
I wasn't concerned though, and about a week later I received my bags.
