Sharp assessment, Peter, of what sounds like.... (Reply to this comment)

...a mediocre attempt at covering a topic muchin need of further exploration. The myths of homophobia in the locker room, especially as reported in the mainstream press (Mike Piazza, anyone?) surely outweight the truths.

Doesn't sound like Woog gets close enough to delivering the goods in this particular tome.

cheers,

for sharing some of the pitfalls of this book. With this much knowledge of the subject, I think maybe you would be better suited to pen the sequel. Great review!

Evil woman here... (Reply to this comment)

It's a shame that Woog perpetuated the myth about women being responsible. It seems like this book could really help people understand gay male athletes better. As it is, it seems like its just more fodder for the ignorant masses who just want to find someone to blame for something they don't understand.

Thanks so much for reviewing this, Peter. Look forward to your review of the sequel. :)

Not to mention . . . (Reply to this comment)

the rather patronizing attitude towards gay men implicit in the assumption that they could be forced, somehow, against their will into such a lifestyle by the machinations of wicked women.

(Just how exactly does he suppose we women accomplish this manipulation anyway? Do tell -- I had no idea I had such power.)

Absolutely wonderful review, highlighting effectively the book's weaknesses and strengths.

... Woog initially appears to know better, until early in his book when he characterizes women as wielders of sinister powers to lead men astray and, incidentally, paints all gay bars as dens of iniquity so powerful that no one can resist their evil allure ...

Damnit, this is the first I have heard of my sinister, leading men astray powers. I wonder how I would go about practicing them?

I have to admit, I have seen a few gay bars in my time (shhh) and I really would have never thought to convey them as so powerful one could not resist them - in actuality there are plenty I have resisted and hope to never return to. *grin*

Wonderful writes as always Peter. Each one is like opening a present and has been since your arrival on the site. I am happy to still be able to cherish that. Thank you.
