| Othello511's Full Review: Sharp MD MT15 MiniDisc Recorder |
So I decided to pick up a minidisc player via Yahoo Auctions, after reading some good reviews and discovering minidisc.org. Let me tell you folks this little recorder/player combo does the trick. First of all the price was right, $141.00 USD w/ shipping, about $199 retail. For a decent minidisc unit that records the price is great for a newbie to the format. Yep that's right I'm a minidisc newbie, and I recommend any newbie check out what this format is all about. There are many advantages over mp3 players and CD-r/w, however that's another discussion.
Specs:
Connectors: In: Mic, line, optical. Out: headphone
Dimensions: 87.9x29.8x79.7mm, 235g
Battery Life: Alkaline AA x 2 - Recording:7.5 hrs Playback: 15 hrs
In the Box:
AC Adapter
RCA Optical Cable
Carrybag (cheesy and not protective really)
Better than average rigid headphones.
Use:
Recording is as easy as plugging the included optical cable into your computer's audio out (makes great discs from mp3's) or into the headphone (miniplug) jack of your stereo. In other words it records anywhere including with an optional microphone.
Playback is ungodly simple. Press play, stop etc...(Bet you figured that one out yourself) One nice feature is the unit remembers where you left off in a track even when you turn the unit off. Very sweet.
This particular unit doesn't come with a remote but for me that’s not a big deal. The 10 sec antishock does its job unless you are a jogger then opt for something with at least 40 secs. To test this unit I literally shook the unit violently (not recommended btw) until it skipped.guess what.... 11 secs till the skip. This should be sufficient for the average user.
Impression:
Well as an electronic music junkie I have lots of mp3's but no burner. The minidisc provides me with a cheap way to take my music with me. Minidiscs can be re-recorded about 1 million times (don't think I'll test this one) The Sharp MD MT15 offer plenty of value for the money and is a great unit for the minidisc newbie.
