True, you must have a least the data packet online plan to get over the air program (which I believe has low to no monthly fee but charges for the amount of data that comes to the phone each month for the net), but if you buy the optional cable that runs between your computer and the phone you can download the apps to your phone without an online plan.

My husband and I have both got Nextel service. He has the i 90 and I have the i 50sx (non-flip).
I just wanted to add a few things...
My phone would be calling everyone I know while it is in my bag, so it has a keypad lock for that purpose (most cell phones do!)Very easy to lock/unlock.
Also, the games are downloadable only if you have the optional internet service (not everyone may know that).
My i 50 is internet ready, but I do not subscribe to internet service so I cannot dl any new games (only came with 2).
