Pros: 2nd Final Fantasy Game to come to america and debut on Snes, it's fun too
Cons: Not Really Number 2, was made easier for us silly simple minded Americans
The Bottom Line: This is a very fine game to have in your Super Nintendo Collection. I only reccomend this game to Final Fantasy fanatics since it is so old.

Intro: I want the truth. But you can't handle it.
This game fooled me and thousands of Americans when it came out in the early 90's. I was little and very gullible to what the video game industry was putting out. This game was not Final Fantasy 2, but Final Fantasy number 4. This game was followed by Final Fantasy 3. This game was not 3 either, it was 6. The fault of this whole mess up of numbers was from the Japanese people. What was the reason? Here it is
The Japanese are to Blame!
The real Final Fantasy 2 was only released in Japan. Most video games are made in Japan and distributed in Japan until it can be translated into english and shipped to America or deemed a good enough game to even be produced for America. The company who created the Final Fantasy series, Squaresoft, was just starting out. They got lucky and producecd one really good game called Final Fantasy. They decided to make another one. The only problem is that it crashed and burned in Japan. The company wasn't feeling they would survive if they produced the game in America. So they decided to not ship it or translate it. They then created Final Fantasy 3, which is not the one all us Americans know on Super NES. Since it was a good it in Japan, Squaresoft used the money it made to produce a fourth one on Super NES, since it was the new system at the time, and this one was the one to finally be OK'ed to translate and ship to the US. Since the US wasn't familiar with the two games that were not made in the US, they slapped a number 2 on it and nobody noticed.
Americans aren't as smart as the Japanese
The thing about this game is that the Japanese thought it was too hard. The problem was that RPG's(Role Playing Games) like Final Fantasy were not popular in the United States in the early 90's. That was also another factor in why 2(japan) and 3(japan) were not released to the US. So Squaresoft took the liberty of dumbing the game down. They took out moves, made monsters easier. Why? So us silly Americans would feel good about beating this realativly easy RPG and be inclined to buy another one. The company was trying to raise a generation of kids, like me, to grow up buying RPGs. And since they always flashed the logo, Squaresoft, at the kids every time they played the game, they grew up trusting only Squaresoft games.
The Japanese can't count
The game was a success. Kids like me ate it up. But Square soft decided that they didn't want to produce Final Fantasy 5 in America either. Another game that my childhood eyes did not see. They finally came out with one of the best Final Fantasy's, Final Fantasy 3. Oh, No! They did it again. How stupid. So now, the US was only aware that 3 Final Fantasys existed. The next game Squaresoft produced was on Playstation, because they were having bad realations with Nintendo. In 1997, they came out with Final Fantasy 7 in the US. Ok........Lets see the order goes 1, 2, 3, 7? Finally, Squaresoft's secret was out...... they can't count, I mean they were selfish and were holding out some good quality games on the US. Now you know why I say Squaresoft lied to the US and treated us like dummies.
The Game
Ok, now on to the storyline of the game. It's a good one. You are a Dark knight that works as a general for an evil king. You bad feel as if you are being sent to towns to hurt innocent people and steal their magical crystals. There are 4 crystals earth, wind, water, and fire. The king takes away your high rank and sends you with a package on a journey. You are ignorant about the fact that you are about to change the world. Its a good intro and the story keeps the player active. The one cool thing about this game is that it was the first Final Fantasy to have characters with personalities and names the game gives to you.
Good old fashioned gameplay
Each character has their own abilities and cannot use any of the other characters abilities. It is the most popular way of class systems that the Final Fantasy's have. This is what makes the game very enjoyable; However, the only problem is that since those darned Japanese Squaresoft people made it easier, they took out some special moves that the classes could use and made really powerful magic faster to get.
Music, Graphics, Replay Value
This game has the old style of music, which is not played by an orchestra, but still is composed with primitive sound. This is standard for most Super NES Games. The music is at least entertaining enough to not want to destroy the game aftert hours of playing and hearing the same annoying music over and over again. The graphics were also typical for SNES but slightly improved 16-bit graphics compared to previous Final Fantasys on regular NES. There were no visible errors in the graphics unless the game cartridge was improperly inserted into the game console. This game is probably fun to play once or twice. Like most RPGs, this game is very similar if played several times, which diminishes the replay value.
Conclusion
This game is a fine game, but the game will never be a full Five star game since it was dumbed down and made an easy challenge. You can get the real Final Fantasys 2 and 3 online for an emulator and they are fully translated by bigger nerds than me. You can also get the Hard-type Final fantasy 4 for playstation on a collection released game which also has Chrono Trigger. I guess I wrote this review more to educate about the series than to talk about the game. It is valuable to know the big story behind the making of the game to make it enjoyable to play.
