| surferdude7's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1000w Printer |
The Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1000 Personal Printer is a laser printer for under $200 that makes it affordable for home use. This is a monochrome or black and white laser printer rated to shoot out 10 pages per minute. This makes it an ideal laser printer for home use or for small business applications.
The LaserJet 1000
The printer is rated at 600 x 600 dpi (Dot Per Inch) with Ret (Resolution Enhanced Technology) to produce up to 1200 dpi. You can also set the dpi as low as 300 x 300 to make the toner cartridge last a lot longer.
The duty cycle of the printer is 7000 pages-per-month with the toner cartridge giving you about 2500 pages at 5% coverage using the 600 x 600 dpi setting.
The LaserJet 1000 will hold 250 sheet of regular paper in the input tray and 125 sheets in the output tray.
Setup
This printer is not made for Mac or Linux. It is made for the PC supporting Windows 98, 2000, ME and XP.
Setting up the HP LaserJet 1000 is as easy as it gets. You need a USB port for connection with a USB cable included with the printer. A parallel port is not supported.
Instructions are easy to follow, first install the integrated toner and drum cartridge. Then plug in the USB cable to the printer and your PC computer. Install the included CD and follow the on screen instructions. Now you are ready to use the Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1000 Personal Printer.
If you get any printer error messages then look at the CD for more help or you can use their online help.
Requirements
This printer will run on most computers with the listed Windows I mentioned in the setup.
If you are using Windows 98 then you can have a processor as low as a Pentium 90 MHz. The other Windows operating systems require at least a Pentium 150 MHz processor.
Recommended RAM for Windows 98 and ME is 32MB and for 2000 and XP they recommend at least 64MB of RAM.
You will also need a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive for software installation with 15MB of free disk space.
Any AMD K6-2 processor or Duron and Athlon processor will run this printer.
For a smooth performance I recommend at least a Pentium 200 MHz or equivalent with 128MB of memory.
My Tests
I am using this printer on a computer with an AMD Athlon 800 MHz processor with 384MB of Ram.
Printing a whole document on an 8.5 x 11 inch page setup took about 18 seconds before it started to print the first page. I had is set up to print 10 pages of the same document to see if I could get them all in the 1 minute time frame. My result was it took 1 minute and 9 seconds to get the 10 pages once it started to print. So my total time was the 18 seconds before it started plus the 1 minute and 9 second giving me a total time of about 1 minute and 27 seconds from start to finish.
Now printing a graphic 8.5 x 11 inch page took about 45 seconds before it started and it did shoot out about 8 pages in the first minute.
These are my tests and they vary according to how much text is on your documents and for graphics, how much graphics there is on the page.
Costs
The Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1000 Personal Printer is priced below $200, I actually found one as low as $159.
The toner cartridge will cost you about $65 when you need a new one, this breaks down to 2.6 cents per page. At 600 x 600 dpi this will give you about 2500 sheets so if you drop all of your printing down to 300 x 300 dpi it might stretch it to about 5000 sheets of paper. The 300 x 300 dpi produces very nice looking documents.
Overall
The Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1000 Personal Printer produce good clear documents in monochrome, it was easy to setup and use.
The cost of the printer is very attractive even if it prints a little slower than the high priced models. Hewlett Packard quality printing is built into the LaserJet 1000 Personal Printer.
