Netflix Reinvents The Video Rental Business by Joubert | Aug 11 '02 Netflix is one of the web’s business models created out of the web’s lowered transaction costs. Not yet profitable, the company has taken on a gargantuan task – weaning Americans from video store aggregator Blockbuster by providing subscription based...Return to opinion

Re: Question (Reply to this comment)
by Joubert, in Online Stores & Services
Thanks for stopping by and commenting. There were probably a dozen or more facts in the review that are nowhere on Netflix's site, but that's a minor point. ;-)
Obviously things shift when a company moves from startup to public, especially when the review of an online service is more than a year old.
I suspect your mileage may vary based on where you live and the types of items you order. That's what I have learned after reading dozens of Netflix reviews here. In that respect, they are very much like similar entities (e.g., public libraries or Blockbuster retail stores). Proximity and your choices seem to define the level of happiness.
Thanks again for dropping by.

Question (Reply to this comment)
by alfrankenstein
A very well written review, but didn't provide anything crucial that I needed to know that wasn't on Netflix web site.
I really wanted to know if there were problems with videos getting lost in the mail, and what happens in that case? How well is the company organized? Can you get your first choice easily, or do you have to wait several weeks in line?

Notify the Better Business Bureau in your area. Tell the agency your problem and have them fix it.If they don't handle this type of problem, have them refer you to someone who does.

I must say I'm surprised. I've had discs lost in the mail twice and never been asked to pay for them. I've also found their help center pretty useful. I would send them an email indicating when you expect a response and then contact your local consumer affairs office.
Very, very strange situation you describe.

Only One Per Week? (Reply to this comment)
by cdjunkiejr
I only rent about one movie per week or less. I was getting sick and tired of the $21.98 fee per month, so I went to cancel my service. I was then told that for just $10 per month, I can get 4 rentals. I love this plan. If you go over your 4 per month, you have to wait until the next month for it to be sent out though... but great plan.

Great Review! (Reply to this comment)

I loved Netflix the whole time I used it. I haven't starting using it again since our last two moves but hope to get situated and actually have time to watch some movies.
And just FYI I lost the return mailer once and they told me to just mail that DVD in with another DVD. That way you don't have to pay for shipping costs back to them.
Great job on this review!

You remind me that... (Reply to this comment)

... I've been horribly deficient at watching and returning my DVDs quickly the last two months. Erp. I have a feeling I'm paying $12 a rental, but I don't want to calculate it more precisely than that.
The only positive point to paying too much to rent Netflix is that I'm convinced I'd be paying too much to rent Blockbuster with the late fees I always seemed to acrue. At worst, I'm just no further ahead..without the stress of having a clerk look at me at Blockbuster and tell me that I'm late!
Great review, George.
Thanks!
