I came across Amazon.com a few years ago when the online reward programs were in full swing. It seemed like every program offered Amazon.com gift certificates as a reward and after looking at the site and seeing some of the cool toys they offered ...

Please tell amazon.com to stop selling animal fighting materials so I can end my boycott and start saving money again! See my Amazon.com review for more details:

Amazon has become increasingly misleading lately (Reply to this comment)

You may find it very difficult to redeem your gift certificates at Amazon.com. It's hard to find the place to enter the code, and you can't use it toward used products from their merchants. (By merchants, I mean the little vendors that partner with Amazon to sell primarily used versions of the products that Amazon sells.)

The worst of it is that Amazon doesn't clearly warn you that you can't use your gift certificates toward merchant sales until it's too late. I suppose that Amazon would say that it's the customer's responsibility to investigate this beforehand, but when essential information is hidden from the customer three links deep, I think it's fair to say that Amazon is being misleading in this respect.

They also don't let you cancel orders made with merchants, or even update your mailing address. In the new checkout system, you're not prompted to check and/or update your mailing address, so where does this system leave you? With products sent to the wrong address, with Amazon saying it's the merchant's problem and the merchant saying it's Amazon's problem. But of course, it's the customer who is out $50 bucks, so it's really your problem.

I just got finished reading your wonderful well-thought-out review of amazon.com, and I wonder to myself if you order from them all the time why you didn't use your gift certificate balance more frequently? If I had $300 in gift certificates I sure wouldn't wait a year to spend them. So now you are blaming the company for something you should have taken the responsibility for in the first place. Come on- you said yourself that they sent you out a free replacement CD burner, express shipping, free of charge because someone stole it off of your doorstep. Now because you let some gift certificates expire you will never order from the company again?

Maybe you need to re-evaluate those anger management classes you were thinking about taking.

Because of your review I went to Amazon to check my Gift Certificate balance and find out when it expires. No info! I have a balance but there is no indication of an expiration date. I'm sure they plan on keeping it too.

There is also No way to cash out gift certificates for Amazon. Givers may want to remember this when they purchase Amazon gift certificates. You are forcing the person to buy from Amazon, whether they chose to shop there or not. Personally I chose not to shop there.

Thanks for the update Freak!
