Problem is... I don't remember much about the original Inspiron 4000 series anymore... the casings are at least similar. Components between the notebooks were interchangable. I seem to remember the 4000 series being a bit boxier and with a less prominent fan/vent ducts. The 41xx have a bit more curved appearance. Port and slot wise, the models were pretty much the same.
The 4000 series was introduced 3 years ago I believe. The 4100 was a late summer to fall 2001 model.

I thought that the Inspiron 4150 casing design dates all the way back to the Inspirion 4000, not just the 4100 series. So, the laptop housing was used basically throughout the 4xxx series.
