I am writing this review over my brother's laptop. If you have read my previos review of my Inspiron 8200 you would see that I have not been happy with the performance of the Pentium 4. I know that it is a laptop and it is not meant to be powerful as a desktop, but for some reason this laptop is not as agile as my previos 8100 which had a PIII at 1 Ghz, 512 RAM, 15" UXGA, 32 MB GeForce2. It may be that the P4 has not had enough time to be perfected.
Before I go on to the good and bad, I will let you know what I had on this baby. I have a P4 at 1.6 Ghz, 512 MB DDR SDRAM, 32 MB ATI Radeon 7500, 14.1" SXGA screen, 24x CD-RW/8X DVD modular drive.
On to the good things. We have had NO PROBLEMS with this laptop. It has run well from the start and I am completely satisfied with the way that it has been handling installing programs, running them, playing video games, etc. although it is not quite as quick as my 8100. It has definitely beat out my 8200 though in terms of being trouble free, running games slow down free like a champ, and never having problems with memory. The graphics are impressive for a laptop, but the GeForce4 for the 8200 is noticeably better. That is not a problem though if you don't plan on video intensely like I do. The screen is clear when plugged up to the AC pack and the high resolution is nice. The portability is also really nice. It is very light, thin, and easy to handle. It is also very attrative with all of the nice ion silver palm rests and lcd back. The battery also lasts for about 3-3 1/2 hours which is nice for me.
The bad actually isn't that bad. The processing speed is somewhat slow compared to the figures presented. And from experience, I KNOW THE TECH SUPPORT IS AWFUL. The other thing I noticed is that this laptop actually costs more than a similarly equipped 8200, their supposed "desktop replacement". Oh well it is also a much better laptop. Having to switch out bays regularly becomes painful though.
