Having ordered this unit just before Christmas 12/23/00, I got and turned in on only to find the screen didn't come on. I could hear it boot up and I almost could see enough to know that the system did boot. How disappointing to have a new computer that didn't even work. Well I got the manual out at 6:30 PM and found the phone number for Toshiba tech support. Now I have called their tech support before on my older laptop and I knew IF they answered, I would be in for a long wait. Within 60 seconds, to my amazement I had a technician on the phone and even more amazing, he KNEW what the problem was. I guess there are still Christmas miracles
to be found.
He explained that the tiny little button/switch located near the base of the screen is prone to sticking. This is a known problem and just jiggle the button for about 10 seconds and it popped up and low and behold, I could see...its a miracle!
Toshiba is one of the few brands that do not use touch pad mouses (which I hate). Using the Toshiba button for mouse is a love/hate situation depending on your love/hatred of touch pads. For whatever reason my fingers don't work well with touch pads and I find the Toshiba button to be work better for me. Touch pad or buttons are not as good as a good mouse, which I would still recommend connecting if you are doing detailed work.
After the initial trauma I suffered the system has worked flawlessly and I love it. Of course it comes with a bunch of useless software that you might consider erasing, but then all new systems come with that stuff. All in all I consider it a solid system.
