Buy these if you have a PDA but share them with a friend.
Written: Jan 28 '01 (Updated Jan 28 '01)
Pros:Necessary accessory for your Palm or Visor. Works as advertised.
Cons:Expensive, difficult to apply.
The Bottom Line: Works as advertised but very expensive. Share them with a friend to save money. Also, it's not necessary to replace them as often as the manufacturer recommends.
In each package you get a set of 12 thin, self adhesive plastic sheets custom cut for whatever PDA you have. They are designed to protect your PDA from scratches, to provide a better texture to write on (supposedly like paper), and to reduce glare. On all three accounts, they work well:
1) The sheets definitely protect your PDA from scratches. I would recommend this as a necessary first purchase for any new PDA user. Take a look at someone's PDA screen that has not used some sort of protector and see how scratched up it can get in the Grafitti area if you don't believe me.
2) In terms of writing texture, I find that it does help a lot. Although I wouldn't say it feels like paper, it does feel like a more giving surface than the hard glass on my Visor Platinum. Also, rather than slipping on the glass like my Stylus used to, my strokes are more controlled and I think my writing accuracy and speed have increased. On the other hand, as you would expect, you do have to press a little harder since there is now something between your stylus and the pressure sensitive screen.
3) In terms of glare, it has been virtually eliminated which is a good thing. If you are a frequent user of the Mirror program for the Visor or Palm, it won't work very well anymore with one of these on unfortunately.
In terms of criticism:
1) These things are ridiculously priced. It's $20 for 12 small pieces of fancy Saran Wrap. I know that $20 for protection for your PDA is a worthwhile investment. I also respect the need for the manufacturer's need to make money but the margins on this product are incredible. They must cost no more than a few cents to produce.
2) Applying the WriteRights can be a little tricky. Since these sheets are cut to fit your screen precisely, your margin or error in application is virtually zero. The card they provide helps remove most of the air bubbles. Any that you don't remove tend to disappear overtime magically which is a good thing. The only thing you really need to beware of is getting fingerprints on the adhesive otherwise you'll have a fingerprint on your PDA screen for as long as you have that particular screen protector.
Finally, although the manufacturer recommends that you replace your WriteRight every month, I haven't found that to be necessary. It's simply a ploy for you to buy more of their product. Once every three to four months is more than adequate. The instructions should say, "Replace as necessary." So buy a pack of these and share it with a friend and split the cost.
Overall, a good product which performs as advertised but unreasonably priced.
I hope you found this review useful. If you did, please recommend it to others. For more information about my other PDA experiences, please check out my reviews of the Visor Platinum and of the Tiger Woods Golf Springboard Module. Thanks for reading.
