Pros: Heavy glass and nice wide opening.
Cons: See through glass, at my house, tends to get water spots.
The Bottom Line: A nice price for a handy storage container.

| Prepoia's Full Review: Anchor Hocking Cookie & Cracker Jar w/ Silver Lid ... |
When my son bought his new house last summer, a housewarming party followed. He is in his twenties, single, and I did not stay for the all night part of “warming his house” but I was there earlier in the evening. One of the thoughtful guests brought a different kind of bottle than most. Actually it wasn’t bottle-shaped but it does hold a gallon and reminded me of when I was young and drank out of empty jelly jars. Does anyone remember “Blue Moons?” I definitely approved of the contents of this gift. The container held chocolate chip cookies that had been freshly baked that morning. Since my son didn’t have any warm milk (except for what he’d taken out and left on the cupboard when he ran out of refrigerator space for the other drinkables) he didn’t open the jar during the evening.
The next day, however, when I returned to his house to help with clean-up, we enjoyed the cookies a lot. They were absolutely fresh and even warm because the container was sitting on the counter where the sun hit it. Yes, even the chocolate chips were soft.
I didn’t get back to his house for a couple of weeks but when I returned, the container was still sitting in the same place. Since there must have been at least three dozen cookies in it, he hadn’t emptied it out yet. (I’m sure I would have finished them long ago but he’s not much of a sweet eater.) I opened the jar and the cookies were just as fresh as when they were newly baked.
Flash forward to a couple of weeks yet from that visit and yes, he still had cookies left and yes, they still were fresh. This container really does the job.
The jar holds one gallon and can be used for a multitude of items that you store in your cupboard. It is clear glass and the thickness makes it not easy to break. It has in fact fallen to the floor onto a kitchen rug and not broken. It has a silver screw on top with a vacuum seal (and this comes in different colors if you wish.) You can use it as a cookie jar, to store flour or sugar, baking ingredients, snacks, or any dry goods that you have on your shelves. The corners are gently curved and have grooves in the glass that help you to grip the container better.
The opening or mouth of the jar is wide (remember the wide mouth jars we used to use for canning?) The opening is almost the width of the jar. It makes it really easy to put your hand in to take out cookies and it makes it easy to fill with whatever ingredients you wish to use it for.
As for cleaning it, it couldn’t be easier. You can wash it in hot soapy water or you can put it in the dishwasher. I have not put the lid in the dishwasher because the material it’s made of seems as though it might dull, discolor or get ruined. That I just wash by hand and dry by hand so the shine doesn’t get spotty.
Well, you may have asked, “How does she know that it’s been dropped on the floor?” “How does she know how easy it is to put ingredients into it?” The answer is easy. My son has limited counter space and few ingredients to store. So, after a few months had gone by, he asked me if I’d like to take it home and keep it. He didn’t want to use his counter space for an empty (no he doesn’t know how to bake and evidently doesn’t know how to pour in snacks) cookie jar. When I mentioned it didn’t need to hold cookies he said he just didn’t want to bother with it all (gee, big deal, huh?) I gladly accepted!
I don’t have it sitting on my counter either (afraid one of the relatives that gave it to him will see it) but I use it to store my sugar in. And, it works really well. The style is not too stylish for counter use anyway so we are all happy with the results.
Except, for my husband; he wants to use it to store some of his shop nails.
