This program will scan your pc for what is known as "Spy-ware"... Spyware can come in several "flavors" from cookies that simply track what you do on your computer, where you go, what you look at, to more active programs that run in the background tracking everything you do on your system. The latter type can be especially dangerous, as it takes up memory & CPU time, causing your system to slow down, and use valuable bandwidth, especially on a dialup connection. Often times spyware will even cause your system to become unstable and crash unexpectedly.
AdAware will scan your PC for all forms of spyware, from cookies of known tracking sites, to the more "active" and intrusive programs such as web3000, gator, etc.
Did you know tha most DISNEY software installs spyware that will track where your children go, what sites they visit, when, how often and report back to a central database that will be used to target them and you for advertising as you surf the web?
There are a *few* shareware programs that will NOT work if their spyware portion of the program is removed, but these are EXTREMELY RARE.
I have scanned customer's PC's with this software that have had over 400 "components" detected and removed. I have YET to have ANY software fail to work after running this utility, however have had one free-ware email client re-install it's spyware component the first time it was ran after being cleaned.
