My 13 year old son was looking for a bike...not any bike, but a BMX "stunt" bike. I was looking for his birthday present and I wasn't paying big bucks. We started the search.
We searched both B/M stores and online. Fogdog was chosen for a couple of reasons:
FogDog has an easy interface to navigate through and different ways to sort items--a customer can look under a specific sport, department or just browse through what's new. Once you decide on what you are looking for, you can go to that page(cycling) and then specify what you want; are you looking for a bike? Cycles are categorized which makes look up simple. Bike racks? Helmets? Scooters? All have specific pages.
Another feature is that you can set up your search on price and brand. I didn't need to look at bikes that cost over $200--this option helped us cut down on unnecessary browsing.
The pricing is good and there is a wide variety of prices-- I checked today & prices are in the range of $80-799.99.
The day we picked out his bike, there were 23 BMX-type bikes to choose from. Today, the site lists 21, but that's still a decent selection.
Specials--Fogdog pairs up with other websites and offers rebates, gift cards and their own sales to help cut down on the consumer's cost.
They also have an outlet center which offers some good prices. I was searching through shoes, I'm not going to pay $99 for a pair of Kobe Bryant shoes, but somebody may think that's a good deal.
My son picked out the 02 Mongoose Motivator--approx. $150. I ordered the bike using ebates website($6 rebate) & a gift card from mypoints($25) which brought the bike down to under $120. We decided to have the bike delivered to my husband's job site instead of home since they're on the UPS daily route, thinking the bike would get there sooner.
Only problem is that Fogdog uses FedEX, not UPS--it was delivered on Saturday which is not a work day at this business. FedEx did not try to redeliver until Tuesday--that was the my son's birthday, but we spent a day trying to track it down.
When we unpacked the bike, there were scratches on one wheel and the bar from the seat to the fork. I called up FogDog again and customer service gave me a couple of options: send this one back and exchange it(they pay shipping) or 10% off--my son decided that 10% was just fine.
The only complaint or criticism I had with customer service was it was a bit difficult to find the number to call,you have to go to assistance/help/CS, click on contact us which brings up email assistance and then search for a phone number. Considering the ease of the rest of the website, I do think the help desk could be a little simpler.
